and Ashland were deadlocked
in second place after Friday
afternoon clashes in the cir
cuit. ' - Medford whitewashed the
Crater high Comets 6 to 0 in
the counting fracas of a
doubleheader at Cheney field
here and made it an afternoon
stveep by grabbing the non
league second hassle 2 to 0.
Grants pass was certain of no
less than a tie-for the crown
after pounding hapless Klam
ath Falls 20 to 2.

a leap of 21 feet and 71.

100 and the 220 were bet
ter than his owrt record' times
last year. He ran the 100 in
9.7 and the 220 in 22.2. -

for Medford, held Crater to
one hit in the counting con
flict on Friday. In the mean
time, Tornado swatters got to
Bob Fowler for nine bingles
with seven of them figuring
in the scoring. Ray Konopasek
drove in three of the Medford
markers and Cal Dean two.
Medford defense was more
than adequate in holding the
Comets down.
A rousing fourth - inning
homer smack over the center
field barrier by Lowell Dean,
followed by a triple to right
field by Dale Shaw, a walk
to Konopasek and a single by
Ken Jensen accounted for all
Medford scoring in the second
and - on-loop fray. Tom Lau
rance was on the hill for Med
ford and held the Crater nine
hit by Ken Durkee, a passed
ball and another single by
Calvin Dean. In the third can

one. Tourville yielded the oth
er hits and a walk and fanned

Calvin Dean had two hits in

The Tornado ran up a single
run in the second stanza of
the opener. Lowell Dean and
Konopasek singled and an
error on a rap by Jensen en
abled Dean to score. A double
play helped Crater avert fur
ther damage in the inning.
After Konopasek and Jen
sen got away with a double
steal, Barr walked to load the
bags. Dick Durante knocked
the ball to pitcher Fowler and
Konopasek was out on the
throw home. The relay to first
failed to get Durante but
first baseman Dennis Pfaff
threw the ball back to catcher
Randy Campbell who nailed
Jensen trying to come home.
In the third inning George
Ice led off with a single for
Medford. Cal Dean forced Ice
out. Ron Peery was safe on
an error and Lowell Dean
walked to load the bags. All
three runners romped home
on Konopasek's single.
Lowell Dean Triples
The two other runs were in
the seventh inning on a
double by Durante and one
basers by Ice and Cal Dean.
Lowell Dean slammed a triple
in the inning but no run re
sulted since his brother, Cal,
had been doubled off second
base on Peery's flyout.
Crater threatened twice in
the game, getting a man to
third base in the third inning
on a walk, passed ball and
groundout and loading the
sacks in the fifth on a walk,
error and single by Brian
SeweU.
Laurance struck out four
and walked two in the second
mix. Only two men got as far
as second base against him.
Dave Brown doubled and
Fowler singled for the only
hits. For Crater Bill Anhorn
hurled a six hitter, fanning
four and walking two. Frank
Peterson, Cal Dean and Peery
picked up the Medford safe
ties outside the scoring inning.
Crater had three double

school tennis title, won the
District 4 double champion
ship Friday ,and Jim Norland,
also of Klamath and district
finalist last year, claimed the
singles diadem.
The day-long district meet
was held on the Medford
courts.,
Reynolds and Bousquet,

downed a pair of Klamath
teammates in . their Friday

Friday night at the hands of
two young fighters, one of
them a 112-pounder.
Moyer was acting as a referee

AAU championships when
the face punches occurred.
In the 5th bout of the night
he went in to separate two
young battlers and one of
them planted a wild swing on
his mouth, cutting it and
causing it to swell. In, the

pennant race has been unus
ually tight so far this season
and Friday night was no ex
ception as all four games
were decided by one run. ,
Two contests went into ex
tra innings. Sacramento scor
ed a single run in the bottom
of the 13th frame . to shade
San Diego, 2-1, the third
straight night the Padre-Solon
tilts have been decided by
that score. And Portland
pushed across a single tally
in the bottom of the 11th to
edge Spokane by the same
2-1 margin.
In other .' games, Phoenix
halted a rally by Salt Lake
in the final Inning to post a
6-5 decision, and Vancouver
scored a single run in the
opening frame and held on
for a 1-0 victory over Seattle.

A one-three punch was a
big factor in the St. Mary's
victory. The Crusaders took
bothf irst and third places in
four contests. They had the
three other blue ribbons and
three more thirds.
Carl Michael, St. Mary's,
was the day's lone double vic
tor. He took the shot put and
discu. Crusader wins also
were tabulated by Dick Evans
in the mile, Terry Cooper in
the javelin, Dick Hayes in the
quarter-mile, Dave Mansfield
in the pole vault and Jerry
Kerr in the half-imle. St.
Mary's crew of Roguer Hunt,
