He teamed with Norman Ol son, Paul Garren and Chuck McNair for a new mark of :49.6 in the quarter-mile re lay. Tom Kimball won the shot put and ' discus for Central Point. Jim Bandy won three vents for . the Hedrick sev enth. He set a Hornet mark of 16-10 for his grade in the broad jump and took the shot put and 150. A crowd of 20,774 watched the Giants win their fourth straight game, one which was a pitcher's duel most of the way between the two left handers. . ' , Podres had a two-hitter in the works going into the eighth inning. This afternoon's activities were witnessed by 8,500. Despite perfect track con ditions, the times were medi ocre for this meet, advertised as the place where world rec ords are broken. Ancel Robinson of Fresno State won the high hurdles finals in 14.2. The 5,000 meter run was won by USC's intercollegiate champion, little Max Truex. Max threaded his way through 25 other starters in the event to win by 20 yards. But his time was a slow 14:33.9 compared with the world mark of 13:36.8, or Max's own national record of 14:14.5, set here last year. The 100 yard dash final was won by Norton in the good time of 9.4, one-tenth of a second off the world mark. Record N eared In WC Meeting Fresno, Calif .-i-nn Willie Jackson, a tall, slender Los Angeles Harbor Junior col lege freshman,' made the sec ond longest official broad jump in America .this year Saturday when he was mea sured at 25 feet, 9-V inches, as the West Coast Relays got underway Jackson, who jumped 24 feet, 8V2 inches as a high school senior last year, set a relays record with his leap. Only Greg Bell, the Olympic champion, has had a better of ficial leap this year. Game Director Speaking Here Monday night meeting of the Jackson County chapter of the Izaak Walton league is of considerable interest to southern Oregon sportsmen. Phil Schneider, Oregon state game director, will be the speaker. He will speak on the deer management pro gram of the game division of his office. Schneider will show slides and will be assisted by John McKean, chief of opera tions of the game division. The meeting will be at 8 p.m. in the upstairs hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 42 North Front st. . All persons interested are invited. McLoughlin Victor In Freshman Meet McLoughlin Junior High school's potent track aggrega tion, spurred by Bob Rix and Mike Hood, triumphed in the Southern ; Oregon District Freshmen Track meet here Friday 'during an afternoon marked by numerous fine per formances. Rix smashed Medford jun ior high records in winning the 1,320 and 660-yard runs and Hood won the high hurdles, the high jump and 330-yard run as Medford compiled '159 points and gained firsts in seven of the 18 events. Grants Pass was Tunner-up with 123 5-6 and three indi vidual firsts. Crater was vic tor in six events and was third overall with 81 1-3. Kla math Falls had 44 points, Hedrick 39 5-6 and Ashland 19. Hedrick and Klamath each took one event. Rix's 3:27.8 in three-fourths mil eand 1:28 in the 660 were better than his previous fast times of 3:34.2 and 1:30.7. Hood had a fine leap of 5 feet 9 V4 inches in 'the high jump, an inch under his school jStandard and his :38.1 in the 330 was just a 10th of a second under a three-year-old mark. Other Medford marks were established by Danny Sieg, Hedrick Junior high, ' with 19-3V4 in the broad jump and the McLoughlin 440-yard re lay combine of Terry Earl, Hood, Bill Charley and Phil Humphreys. The Bulldogs were second to Grants Pass in the relay in almost a dead heat at :46.6. Former local marks were 19-2V4 and :47. Burton Wins Three Max Burton, Crater, joined Hood in the triple win col umn, taking the pole vault with 10-9, the javelin with a fine 160-2 and the low hurdle second heat. His vault, like some of the other bests Fri day, may be a meet record but no list of the top marks of past contests was avail able. Ray Meek, . Both races at each distance counted for points, ( but fewer points and only three places were given in the second heats.
