Newspaper Page TextOrioles Edge White Sox; Yanks Open League Lead Br UNITED PRESS Jack Harshman, who was the question mark of the Bal timore pitching staff in pre season calculations, became the American League's first five-game winner of the year Saturday when he hurled the Orioles to a 5-2 triumph over the Boston Red Sox. Harshman's five victories equal the entire team total wins of the team which trad ed him away the Chicago White Sox. Harshman, who had a seri ous back ailment which al most caused the deal to be cancelled, yielded only five hits and struck out five bat ters, including Ted Williams twice. Erratic control helped get him into trouble in the sixth, seventh and eighth in nings but he twice was bail ed out by Baltimore double plays. ' Huskies Stroke To Crew Win Over Cal'Bears Oakland HD University of Washington Huskies stroked their way to victory Saturday over the University of Cali fornia in both the junior var sity and freshman crew race events at the Oakland estu ary. In the Jayvee race, the vis itors' margin of victory was five and three-quarters length over the Cal team with a time of 15.2. The Cal crew was clocked at 15.25. The victorious Huskie frosh crew covered a two-mile course, with a time of 9.44 to beat the Bear underclass men by two lengths. The Cal into the bottom of the sev enth but Adcock led off the frame with a homer that tied the score. Two outs later Del Rice singled and Crandall, batting for Rush, homered into the left field bleachers. Smokey Burgess homered for the Redlegs. The second-place San Fran cisco Giants pushed over a run in the ninth to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2. The Pittsburgh Pirates crushed the and the St. Louis Cardinals edged out the Chicago Cubs, 3-1, in other National league games. Bill MazeroskI knocked in four runs with two homers and a single to lead a 15-hit Pittsburgh attack on seven pitchers. Bob Skinner also had three hits for the Pirates who made it easy for Vernon Law to register his fourth win. Rookie Ray Semproch, kayoed in the first inning, was the loser. Vinegar Bend Mizell won his first game of the season with ninth-inning relief aid from Larry Jackson as the Cardinals beat the Cubs for the . second straight day. Ken Boyer homered and Del Ennis doubled home one run for the Cardinals. Stan Musial went hitles for the second straight game and still needs seven hits, to reach the 3,000-mark. Ford, who was hit on the left fore arm by a pitched ball in the third inning, did not suffer a serious injury. Dick Donovan struck out seven Indians as he gained his first win for the White Sox. Nelson Fox and Ron Jackson knocked in four of the White Sox' runs, Fox' third hit driving in the win ning tally in the eighth. Ray Boone homered in the second inning and singled home the winning run in the fourth for the Tigers, who got six-hit pitching from Billy Hoeft. It was the second straight game in which Boone, who had gone 0-for-14, drove in the winning run. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Jacksonville Butte Falls high came out in front of a tight loop chase by bouncing Jacksonville 10 to 8 here Friday to capture the Jack son County B league baseball mantle. The Loggers wound up with a 4-2 conference standing to finish one game ahead of Jacksonville and Prospect. Butte Falls and Jacksonville's Redskins were tied going into Friday's final league brush. Weh meier Joins Detroit (IP) Herman Wehmeier, a veteran of 11 full seasons in the National league, joined the Detroit Ti gers last night after being ob tained Friday on waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. Mickey McDermott was optioned to Miami of the In ternational league on a 24 hour recall basis to make room for Wehmeier. McDer mott had to give his permis sion before the switch was made because he's spent 10 years in the majors. Neither Wehmeier nor Mc Dermott have been impres sive this season. Wehmeier pitched six innings for the Tigers Saturday Cards and was a loser. Mc Dermott was hit hard in his infrequent appearances. Wehmeier spent seven full seasons with Cincinnati but his best year was 1957 when he won 10 and lost 7 for the Cards. McDermott, an erratic southpaw, once had an 18-0 record with. theBoston Red Sox.
