April 14, 1957 New Credit Regulations Expected in Argentina Buernos Aires (U.R) Anxi ous Argentine importers await ed announcement of new govern ment credit regulations Satur day to allow them to resume business. All Argentine banks and ex change brokers suspended cred it operations for imports at noon Friday on order of the Ar gentine Central bank. Financial sources said the move was a forerunner of new regulations restricting credits for import in an effort to con serve the nation's dollar supply and hold down inflation.- Scotch Undoing for London Shopkeeper London (U.R) Shopkeeper Sid Lockyer, 57, told a bank ruptcy court Saturday he had at least 23 children by two wives. "But it's not the kids, bless 'em, who have been my un doing,"' he assured the court. "It's the booze. Four or five bot tles of scotch a week." 'Chance in a Million' Brings Death to Girl Belfast, Northern Ireland (U.R) A "chance in a million" brought death to eight-year-old Ruby Geoghegan, a coroner's in quest showed Saturday. Ruby bent over to pick up her doll and was struck by a stick thrown by a boy playing nearby. Her lip was cut and tetanus germs from the stick entered her bloodstream. A week later Ruby complained of a toothache and was hospitalized. She died five days later of tetanus poisoning. Springtime Special! Juniper recent ly developed a new type sawmill carriage dog which is such an improvement over the old type that he is getting orders for them from sawmills along the Pacific coast. The air-operated units are manufactured by Pacific Machinery company, 1910 Table Rock rd. One of the advantages of the air tong dogs, as they are called, is that they grip the log better and minimize defacing of the wood. Juniper said. Funds Earmarked for Industry Promoticn Grants Pass The Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Commerce has earmarked a $10,000 item in this year's bud get for promotion of industrial development. The announcement was made Thursday following discussion by Sidney Bazett of steps taken to date by the industrial commit tee for new industries, including a pulp mill somewhere in the area. Chang In Law Bazett said a change in Ore gon law would be necessary be fore water could be taken from the Rogue river for industrial use. Local sportsmen agreed to go along with this amendment, provided any industrial water use would be subject to require ments and standards set up by existing water use agencies, he aid. Bazett explained the proposed mill would have an initial 300 ton capacity and would be a kraft rather than sulphite opera tion. He pointed out, however, that subsequent additions might include production of other forms of paper. He estimated such a plant would provide em ployment for about 700 people. Identity of the company report ed interested in such a plant was Lack of Weapons Might Break NATO Bonn, Germany U.R) Chan cellor Konrad Adenauer warned Saturday that refusal to equip the West German armed forces with tactical atomic weapons would mean the break-up of the NATO and Western security de fenses against Communism: Addressing a Christian Demo cratic Party congress at Cologne, Adenauer angrily declared that West German soldiers must not be given equipment inferior to that of their North Atlantic Treaty allies. He again sharply attacked 18 of West Germany's leading at omic scientists who have protest ed against giving A-weapons to West German forces. The 8 1-year-old chancellor ac cused the scientists of "playing politics." But he offered to dis cuss personally with them at any time the political side of this is sue, which has suddenly become one of the most explosive in West German politics. J 2-Day Strike Settled In Chile Dispute Santiago, Chile (U.R) A 12 day strike involving 7,000 work ers of Kennecott Copper com pany's El Teniente Mine .has been settled, the government announ ced Saturday. Labor Minister Raul Barrios said the strikers accepted the company's offer of a 30 per cent pay boost. They had asked 40 per cent. El Teniente is Chile's .second largest copper mine. not revealed. Preliminary work would in clude survey of sites and con sideration of effluent disposal, prevention of air pollution, avail ability of adequate transporta tion and other engineering prob lems. These would be done by Sandwell and company, Van-" couver, B.C., firm which design ed pulp mills at Albany and Toledo, Ore. Coat of Survey It is estimated cost of the survey would be $4,000. This would be shared by the Oregon Development commission, the Josephine County Development committee and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The Jackson county chamber would raise $1,000 for the sur vey and the development com mission would contribute $2,000. It was indicated that the sur vey would not be completed for three or four months. Bazett said, however, that modification of law concerning use of water from the Rogue river would be necessary at the present legis lative session. Otherwise, the project may be delayed two years, or lost entirely to another community, he commented. Chamber directors approved a resolution calling for the amendment of ORS 538270, which would authorize indus trial use of Rogue water. Nuclear Explosion Blamed in Fallout Lansing (U.R) A nuclear explosion set off by Russia re cently was blamed Friday for a five-fbld increase in radioactive fallout in Lansing last week. Recording instruments at Michigan department of health headquarters showed fallout April 11 was 7.0x10-6 microcu ries per cubic meter of air, com pared with 1.5x10.6 microcuries on an average day. Thursday's fallout was about one-fortieth of a dangerous dose for humans. Community Asks UN To Probe Vandalism Luebeck, Germany (U.R) The Jewish community of this north German city Saturday de manded a United Nations inves tigation of vandalism in its ceme tery. A spokesman for the commu nity made up largely of Jews who survived Nazi concentration camps, said the community was not satisfied with police theories that the vandalism was a juve nile prank. The cemetery has been hit by vandals three times since the war. SHORTAGE EASES Washington (U.R) The pub lic health service reports the polio vaccine shortage has "eased somewhat" in the last several days. However, Surgeon Gen eral Leroy E.
