business.
All Argentine banks and ex

it operations for imports at
noon Friday on order of the Ar

Financial sources said the
move was a forerunner of new
regulations restricting credits
for import in an effort to con
serve the nation's dollar supply
and hold down inflation.-

NEW TYPE "DOG" Larry E. Juniper, right,
owner of Pacific Machinery, company, Med
ford, isn't complaining because his business
has gone to the "dogs" lately. Juniper recent
ly developed a new type sawmill carriage
dog which is such an improvement over the
old type that he is getting orders for them
from sawmills along the Pacific coast. The
air-operated units are manufactured by
Pacific Machinery company, 1910 Table Rock
rd. One of the advantages of the air tong
dogs, as they are called, is that they grip
the log better and minimize defacing of the
wood. Juniper said. Juniper is shown above
with machinist Roger Kornstad as they in

for shipment.
Funds Earmarked for
Industry Promoticn
Grants Pass The Grants Pass
and Josephine County Chamber
of Commerce has earmarked a
$10,000 item in this year's bud
get for promotion of industrial
development.
The announcement was made
Thursday following discussion
by Sidney Bazett of steps taken
to date by the industrial commit
tee for new industries, including
a pulp mill somewhere in the
area.
Chang In Law
Bazett said a change in Ore
gon law would be necessary be
fore water could be taken from
the Rogue river for industrial
use. Local sportsmen agreed to
go along with this amendment,
provided any industrial water
use would be subject to require
ments and standards set up by
existing water use agencies, he
aid.
Bazett explained the proposed
mill would have an initial 300
ton capacity and would be a
kraft rather than sulphite opera
tion. He pointed out, however,
that subsequent additions might
include production of other
forms of paper. He estimated
such a plant would provide em
ployment for about 700 people.
Identity of the company report

Lack of Weapons
Might Break NATO
Bonn, Germany U.R) Chan
cellor Konrad Adenauer warned
Saturday that refusal to equip
the West German armed forces
with tactical atomic weapons
would mean the break-up of the
NATO and Western security de
fenses against Communism:
Addressing a Christian Demo
cratic Party congress at Cologne,
Adenauer angrily declared that
West German soldiers must not
be given equipment inferior to
that of their North Atlantic
Treaty allies.
He again sharply attacked 18
of West Germany's leading at
omic scientists who have protest
ed against giving A-weapons to
West German forces.
The 8 1-year-old chancellor ac
cused the scientists of "playing
politics." But he offered to dis
cuss personally with them at any
time the political side of this is
sue, which has suddenly become
one of the most explosive in
West German politics.
J 2-Day Strike Settled
In Chile Dispute
Santiago, Chile (U.R) A 12
day strike involving 7,000 work
ers of Kennecott Copper com
pany's El Teniente Mine .has been
settled, the government announ
ced Saturday.
Labor Minister Raul Barrios
said the strikers accepted the
company's offer of a 30 per cent
pay boost. They had asked 40
per cent. El Teniente is Chile's
.second largest copper mine.
not revealed.
Preliminary work would in
clude survey of sites and con
sideration of effluent disposal,
prevention of air pollution, avail
ability of adequate transporta
tion and other engineering prob
lems. These would be done by
Sandwell and company, Van-"
couver, B.C., firm which design
ed pulp mills at Albany and
Toledo, Ore.
Coat of Survey
It is estimated cost of the
survey would be $4,000. This
would be shared by the Oregon
Development commission, the
Josephine County Development
committee and the Jackson
County Chamber of Commerce.
The Jackson county chamber
would raise $1,000 for the sur
vey and the development com
mission would contribute $2,000.
It was indicated that the sur
vey would not be completed for
three or four months. Bazett
said, however, that modification
of law concerning use of water
from the Rogue river would be
necessary at the present legis
lative session. Otherwise, the
project may be delayed two
years, or lost entirely to another
community, he commented.
Chamber directors approved
a resolution calling for the
amendment of ORS 538270,
which would authorize indus
trial use of Rogue water.

Community Asks UN
To Probe Vandalism
Luebeck, Germany (U.R)
The Jewish community of this
north German city Saturday de
manded a United Nations inves

who survived Nazi concentration
camps, said the community was
not satisfied with police theories
that the vandalism was a juve
nile prank. The cemetery has
been hit by vandals three times
since the war.
