West Coast Business Growth Heading For Banner Year; Northwest Said Lagging San Francisco flJ.R) Business leaders of the West are betting billions that ' 1956 will be another banner year, a United , Press survey showed today. A sampling of executive opin ion in the fastest growing region of the nation indicated that busi ness and industry were pushing ahead with plans for huge out lays for plant expansion despite expected, declines in the key housing and auto industries. - S. Clark Beise, president of Bank of America, predicted that "we will move- ahead steadily and prove " ourselves able to compensate" for soft spots in the economy. Kinsey M. Robinson, presi dent of Washington State Power Co., said his company expects its business to increase seven or eight per cent in' 1J556 "even though business nationally shows some lessening of increase during the last half of the year." Lag in Northweai "Our experience has shown us that there is always a lag in the Northwest area," Robinson said, "so we doubt that it (less ening of increase) will affect our area in 1956." Washington water power has budgeted $22,500,000 for con struction this year, two-thirds of which is earmarked for its $85, 000,000 Noxon Rapids hydro electric project on the Clark Fork river in western Montana. Alden G. Roach, president of United States Steel's Columbia Geneva division, predicted that western steel production in 1956 should total 6,750,000 ingot NARROW VICTORY Pro Western Premier Constantine Karamanlis (above) squeezed through., to . an. upset victory over a Communist-backed coalition in Greece's national elections, according to official results from Athens. Roach based his forecast on the continuing requirements for defense material, large dia meter transmission pipe lines, construction of all types, rail road freight car programs and increased requirements for tin plate to meet expanding can ning requirements." Roach said Columbia-Geneva was in the process of enlarging its 10 open hearth furnaces and auxiliary facilities at the Ge neva works in Utah. When com pleted in 1957, it will boost Ge neva's capacity by 380,000 tons to 2,260,000 tons annually. Predicts Upturn Walter F. Loomis, president of Loomis Armored Car Service, predicted that the latter half of 1956 will be stronger than the first half. The current weakness of the automobile industry in it self will help bring about this upturn, he said. "It is inevitable that the ma jor car manufacturers will speed up production of their new models," Loomis said, "and as sure sufficient transition from the current design, styling and performance to restore widest public acceptance." An important part of planned Caution Urged in Answering Queries Veterans were warned today by County Service Officer Charles Holbrook that an organi zation is mailing questionable material to veterans in envelopes which resemble government cor respondence. Holbrook said the "official lookins envelope" contains a blank check and an instruction form which the veteran fills out with Information about his fi nancial condition.. The veteran will receive a check for a "triv ial amount" in return, Holbrook said. Veterans should use caution in replying to such queries, accord ing to Holbrook. Central Medford Loomis expansion is in size and number of its money trucks, a graphic example of how the weight and value of western bank deposits have grown. In 1940 a one-ton chassis was big enough. Today armored cars must be Hi to 2V4 tonners to support the sheer weight and bulk of the money flow Loomis handles. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser looked.for tremendous growth in the economy in the forseeable future. "All of the basic industries in which we are engaged alumi num, steel, cement, gypsum building products, chemicals, re fractories, etc. can count on high production and heavy de mand in 1956," Kaiser said. Expansions Planned "In fact, substantial , expan sions are being planned in each of these fields." He said that at the present time the various Kaiser affili ated companies have a total ex pansion program amounting to well over a half billion dollars. Harold Quinton, president of Southern California Edison Co., anticipated some overall de cline in the economy this year compared to 1955. But 1955 was a year of "extra ordinary growth" for Edison, re quiring record plant increases for 1956 and 1957, Quinton said. - "During these two years our gross plant additions will total approximately 5126,688,000 and $124,328,000 respectively," he said. "This year alone an antici pated 340,000 kilowatts of gen erating capacity will be added to the Edison system R. L. Minckler, president of General Petroleum Co., reported that several improvements . are planned for the company's refin eries at Torrance and Ferndale. "We expect an " increase of about four per cent in the de mand for oil this year, he said, William A. Allen, president of Boeing Airplane Co., said sales should remain about the . same as in 1955, with the company's employment expected to be fairly constant throughout the year. -. Mark R. Sullivan, president of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., said the company expects to spend about $400,000,000 to meet soaring service demands ACCUSED of padding expense accounts, Marine LL Wes San , tee, America's greatest miler, is banned by AATJ from am ateur Status. February 24, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN Back Stairs: Marquee Carries Message By MERRIMAN SMITH United Press While House Writer Thomasville, Ga. (U.R Backstairs at the South Geor gia White House: Sign of the times: Tha mar quee of a drive-theater on the outskirts of Thomasville is de voted entirely this week to the following message: "Welcome Ike. Say yes. Don't let 'em louse us up." And this is heavy Democrat territory. The President's limousine from Washington with the slid ing panel in the roof over the rear seat causes as much talk in these parts as the second term. The vehicle is referred to lo cally as "Ike's car with the hole for his head." The sliding panel was in stalled to permit the President to stand up and ' greet crowds while passing through towns. When he is on the highway be tween populated areas, the panel is closed to keep wind off the persons riding in the back seat. One slightly irreverent ob server of the presidential scene points out that when Mr. Eisen hower returns to Washington and finally clinches his second term decision, he'll have a choice of historic spots at the White House in which to make up his mind finally, the Lincoln bed room, the Roosevelt swimming pool or the Truman bowling alley. The highly hospitable people of Thomasville . are still very curious about the manner of life of the White House party. The President's staff and attendant press corps is quartered in the Scott hotel, about seven miles from the plantation where the chief executive is staying. One sunny afternoon this week a bellhop was taking it easy in front of the hotel and an old woman walked up. "Boy,'1 she said, "How are these Eisenhower folks tipping you?" MODERN DIANA Grand Rapids, Mich. &I.R) Attractive Gloria Jean Newell, 17, winner of a state outdoor rifle championship last year, does all right with a bow and arrow, too. She bagged a doe with the . first arrow she ever fired at a deer near Remus about 100 miles north of Grand Rapids. The bellman allowed as how he was picking up plenty of quarters. "Oh pshaw," she said with a note of sympathy, "I thought they'd be handing out $5 and $10 bills." , -1 This kind lady probably didn't know that the White House staff travels on a strict $12 daily al lowance, and out of this must pay their hotel bils, all meals, cleaning, laundry, tips and other incidentals, which doesn't leave much even for quarters.
