Wives who habitually address their husbands as "darling" or "dear" are generally self-centered females who think more with their heads than their hearts. Are also usually of a very chilly nature. It is quite probable they have no real love for their spouses. Women who really love their husbands usu ally have a special term of endearment for them. A nick name perhaps. Or a way of ab breviating his first name. Sidelights ' Get it right. Among towns having post offices in the United States the one with the longest name is Truth Or' Consequence, N. M. . . . It was La Kochefou- cald who observed, "As it is the mark of great minds to say many things in a few words, so it is that of little minds to use many words to say nothing." Horses and Women Too many women laugh too loudly and in too shrill a fashion. They cackle. No wonder some feminine gatherings are referred to as "hen parties." If you have a daughter, take steps to pre vent her from growing up to be a cackler. Send her to a voice teacher so she can develop a voice that is sweet and low and a laugh that is musical. Please Note What are your phobias, if any? I suffer from demophobia. That is a dislike of crowds. I got that 11 way from being pushed around in subway rushes when I was a kid. Do you know the origin of "phobia"? It is from Phobias, the god of fear. Triplets Are you by any chance an expectant father? Have your and charming wife settled on the name question? The fashionable fe male of today wears clothes that weigh about two pounds and has about seven things to put on. Yet husbands are still waiting just as long for their wives to get dressed to go out as their grandfathers did. It is the in tricate system of modern fem inine makeup that is said to cause the current delay. Fan-Tan Am asked to explain the Chi nese gambling game called "fan tan' A large number or. buttons are tossed onto a table. One play er grabs a handful of buttons. The other players guess how many buttons will be left over of those in the handful when divided by four. For example, if there are 14 buttons in the handful, the winning guess is ,two. The Chinese play this curi ous game for hours at a time. Same as Americans play poker. Suggestion "A Christmas C a r o 1," by Charles Dickens is rightly rated the second best Christmas story of all time. However, its presen tation is overdone on television and radio during the Yuletide season. Let's have a little change next season. There are many other delightful and heart warm ing Christmas stories. As for ex ample, "The Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry. ; Photo Finish In the last time you lost out on a photo finish, how much do you figure your horse was beaten by? In a race in Aus tralia, ending in a photo finish, It was figured that the winner, Colin's Pride, had beaten the second horse, Sir Actor, by an inch and a quarter! Kiwanis Club Spends S4,1G0 I n Programs For County Children Medford Kiwanis club expend itures for aid to underprivileged children and for its boys and girls projects totalled approxi mately $4,100 last year, officers of the service organization have reported. r The amount points up the importance of the eighth annual Kiwanis Kapers, musical variety production, which . will be pre sented on Feb. 29 and March 1, 2 and 3. Its local talent presen tation is the major fund-raising activity of the year for the club. Denial Assistance - A . large share of the total spent for underprivileged young sters was for dental assistance. Nineteen children were helped at a cost of $1,516. Cost of eye and hearing tests, surgery', hos pitalization and eye glasses pro vided for came to $545.50. One expenditure for plastic surgery for a high school girl came -to $250. ' Her - parents were loaned $500 to be repaid as they can without interest. Kiwanians spent $180 for wigs for two girls without hair. For YMCA youth memberships a total . of $100 was given. In its boys' and girls' work the club provided $343 for Boy and " Girl Scout and Salvation Army summer campships. Some $50 was contributed toward sending a high school boy to Paris, France, for the YMCA world conference. A YMCA lob by partitioning project received $100 and the same amount went to the high school band for its trip to the Shrine East-West all- star football game. Playground Equipment , . The community of Prospect received $55 from the Medford club for badly needed play ground equipment. - Other funds went for activities of Boy Scout Troop 2 which Kiwanians sponsor, to send four boys to American Legion Beav er Boys state, to host 12 boy and girl patrolmen at a Safety coun cil banquet, to honor outstand ing high school band, -. orches tra and choir students, to fin ance its annual Easter egg hunt and to provide bowling instruc tion... Psychological Tesl Tells 'Horse Sense' Berkeley, Calif . 4J.R) A new psychological test has been de veloped ' to ' measure "horse sense" in mentally ill patients. The scientist who developed the test is Dr. Frank X. Barron, an associate research psycholo gist at the University of Califor nia. He calls it a test of "ego strength," which he says is roughly equivalent to "horse sense.'! The test was devised to free psychiatrists from treating persons unlikely to respond to psychotHerapy. -. Dr Barron desribes a person with a high level of ego strength in this way: . THE OLD WAY !V - Cambridge, Mass. (U.R) Seventeenth century Massachu setts had a sure cure for juvenile delinquency the death penalty. Records in the Harvard Law School Library show that in 1648 it became a capital offense for a boy over 16 to "curse or smite his parents" or for a rebel lious son" to disobey his father. The law stood until 1680.
