Birthday Events Slated to Start In Store Saturday Mann's Department store, in Medford sgnce 1910, will observe its 45th anniversary Saturday, Oct. l: The event will be mark ed by a store-wide sale which will continue through Oct. 31. Mann's, one of the oldest retail stores "in southern Oregon, was founded by the late John C. Mann .who purchased a small store in the same building the firm now occupies. At. that time the store covered 3000 square feet of floor space and employed only six people. Store Modernized -"In5 recent years Mann's have spent " nearly a quarter-million dollars in modernizing, air con ditioning and installing equip rnent, according to store offic ials. The present store occupies 27,000 square feet of floor space and has 31 departments. Mann's regularly employs 65, persons and the staff is increased to 80 luring rush periods. Free delivery service, mail ' order service, special order ser vice, charge account privileges and a free gift wrapping service is offered to shoppers. Although the store has chang ed, several of the old time per- sonnel still remain. John Mof fat, present owner and manager, has been wth Mann's for 41 years with the exception of two years service" with the U.S. Army dur lng World War I. Employees who have seen much of Mann's growth are Mrs. Elsie Narregan, who has been with the store for 34 years; Mrs. Margaret Brown, 22 years; Mrs. Alto Pruitt, 25 years; Mrs. Leona Bestul, 16 -ealis; Mrs. Claire Proctor, 11 years and Mrs. Dollie Miller, 13 years.'.;. " To Wear Costume q Many of the ' sales staff will don old-wme apparel for Mann s anniversary event. The costumes will be designed by the em ployees and a Vrize will be swarded for the most original costume. ' ' Mann's 31 departments are managed and merchandised by Mrs. Mildred McCarty, Mrs. Elsie Narregan, Mrs. Alto Pruitt, Mrs. Dora Carnall, Lewis Way hum, Jerry Stambaugh, and Harry Barker, new menswear buyer. Assistant buyers include Mrs. Donna Doyle, Mrs. Suzy Montgomery, Mrs. Leona Bestul and Don Piatt. ' '. Other department heads are Ken Howard, office and credit manager; Mrs. Marjorie Bran- nen, alteration department; Mrs Phyllis Dellaplain, beauty sa lon, and Mrs.' Eileen Mole, ad vertising and display. Active in civic clubs aijd events, he "is on the .board of directors of the Rogue Valley Country club and the Jackson County Savings and Loan association. JOHN C. MANN The late John C. Mann purchased the stock of Baker and Hutchison's store in 1910. The; store occupied a 50 foot frontage at that time and was devoted, to women's ready-to-wear', and dry.' goods. Mr. Mann was active in the store until his death ; , producer. Registration Climbs At Oregon Colleges Portland U.R) Registra tion figures at Oregon's colleges continued to climb upward to day. The State Board of Higher Education said the increase was 15 per cent over' last' year in-, stead of the eight per cent boost expected. Oregon State had the biggest jump, with '5916 enrolled by Wednesday. This was 900 more than on the same day last year. Other figures included: Ore gon 4721 to 4242 last year; Ore gon College of Education, 703 to 606; Southern Oregon 741 to 644; Eastern Oregon 569 to 463 and Portland State 2498 to 2180. McMinnville Doctor Dies in Auto Wreck McMinnville, . Ore. (U.R) Dr. Philip A. Arling, 47,' of McMinn ville, was killed here last night when his car smashed headon into the pillar of a railroad un derpass on Highway 99W. Police said Dr. Arling was alone in his car. . District Attorney T. E. Brown hill said the Rabells had been charged with contributing to the dependency of minors. He said one of the children, five-year-old Cheryl Ann, was found in side a low cage in which she neither could sit down nor stand up. Two-year-old Rodney Lee was found in his crib which was covered with filth The other child, seven - months - old Can dace Rae, was on a davenport, held in by chairs. Brownhill said the children were Mrs.-. Rabell's by. a previ ous marriage. The father, James H.
