EIGHT MTDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, September 30, 1953 High Hells Dam Supporters Plan To Appeal Decision Portland (U.PJ Supporters of a high Hells Canyon dam on the1 Snake river indicated today they would make a court appeal of a Federal Power Commission de cision to grant Idaho Power Company a permit for three low head dams on the Snake river. The FPC yesCerday denied an application for a new hearing on its decision. Intend To Appeal Request for a new hearing had been made by a group of organizations favoring public power development of Hells s. Canyon. They included the Na tional Hells Canyon Association, eight public utility districts of Washington state and the Na tional Rural Electric Co-operative Aociation. The organizations have said they intend to appeal. They now have 60 days in which to appeal to the U.S. court of appeals. Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) said after the rehearing was de nied that the FPC "has slammed the door on the public interest in its latest Hells Canyon de cision ..." he promised that "iio effort that I can make will be spared to win Hells Canyon for the (people of Oregon and the nation." Despite the threat of litigation, -Idaho Power reiterated its inten tion to go ahead as rapidly as possible toward construction of the fkst two of the dams, at G Erownlee and Oxbow. Dinner to Honor Neuberger Cancelled & La Grande U.R) A dinner scheduled last night by Union county Democrats to honor Sen. Richard L. Neuberger was can celled because of a labor dispute at the Sacajawea hotel. C. J. Shorb, Democratic coun ty chairman, said farmers and small businessmen might misin terpret Neuberger's motives if he refused to cross a picket line to enter the hotel. The Culinary Workers union had not posted pickets yesterday but Shorb said he feared they might if the Neuberger dinner were held. The banquet had been planned to precede the Neuberger - Sam Coon public power debate held in La Grande last night. Adventure Ends For Portland Boys Portland (U.R) Two young Portland boys were found yes terday after spending more than 24 hours en an adverturesome expedition to Oregon City. Clifford Collins, 11, and Tom my Eggleston, who said he would be five next month, were found hitchhiking along Highway 99E near Oak Grove. They had been missing since Wednesday after noon when they got the permis sion of their babysitter to go to the neighborhood grocery. Instead of going to the store, the pair headed for Oregon City. They apparently slept in a va cant house at Northeast Broad way and 14th Ave. Four-year- old Tommy said the place was "haunted."
