(U.P.) An agri cultural engineer predicts farm ers in the next 10 years will be combining corn with the same machine used on wheat. The engineer, L. W. Experiments indicate the combine will do an excellent job Floating Bottles To Study Ocean Currents La Jolla, Calif. It plans to throw into the Pa cific ocean a thousand sealed salad oil bottles each month this year. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady, 263 El Camino, Bercrly Hills, Calif. WHO DOESNT WANT TO FEEL BETTER? A periodic drinker solemnly declared that between binges he never touched liquor nor wanted it but that from time to time he just felt the need of a stimulant. I assured him alcohol is not a stimul ant . . . Well, he con tinued, then i ii s t sav I Dr. Bradr . irink when I want to feel better. For that matter, everyone who doesn't feel just fine and dandy would like , to feel better. But it is not at all logical to imagine a drink or any number of drinks can make one who is tired, blue, discouraged, weak, sad or unhappy feel better. Not really. Not any more than a hypodermic of morphine or heroin or a sniff of cocaine or a barbiturate tablet can. To be sure, the cocktail or highball or straight liquor does not deprave or pervert character as quickly as these other "seda tives," sleeping pills or narcotics do. Still, we mult remember, al cohol is a depressant, a narcotic, and in no circumstance a stimul ant. When the drinker, takes a drink "because he wants to feel better" he or she really wants the narcotic because it is an intel lectual depressant. A drink or two or three drinks enough to make any one unfit to drive a car first depress the highest cerebral centres (intellectual) and then the lower cerebral centres (motor, emotional, ani mal). When the highest cerebral cen ries, anxieties, incompetence, slightly stupefied the individual is less aware of his or her wor ries, anxieties, incoompetence, deficiencies, and so, for an hour, more or less, the poor soul im agines he "feels better," when in fact his perception is for the time being in abeyance. When the narcotic effect of the alcohol wears off he or she wiil feel as bad or a little worse than be fore, and so . . . - For that matter, who doesn't feel the need of a stimulant oc casionally? . And who doesn't want to feel" better?' That is not a rhetorical ques tion. There's a good logical (phy siological, psychological) answer, namely, the well nourished indi vidual. I mean to say that one in A-l or optimal nutritional con dition doesn't feel the need of a stimulant. . He or she feels just fine and dandy and not only doesn't want to "feel better" but doesn't want to miss anything by dulling or benumbing conscious ness or sense of well being even for a little while or as company for the misery of those who urge him or her to have just one nar cotic with them. -How does one keep feeling fine and dandy? For most- of us the answer is so simple that we refuse to take it seriously. But that is because most of us are thirty years be hind the times. Physicians and laymen alike are impervious to the newer knowledge of nutri tion. Nevertheless, if I can get in a word while the amateur ! and professional psychologists are drawing breath, let me say that malnutrition or, as we call it nowadays, nutritional defic iency, is the chief cause of drink ing. ' , This applies, I believe, to oc casional, social, moderate or habitual indulgence and to chronic drunkenness, alcoholism, dipsomania or whatever you pre fer to call addiction to alcohol. If my view of the drinking In the days of far-sailing whal ing ships and seal hunters from New England's old ports, a cer tain bleak Patagonian beach be came widely known as "New Haven Green."
