i 'Question' Proves
Spelling Hurdle
J For Youngsters
Berkeley, Calif. (U.P.) The
word "question" proved more of
a spelling hurdle to a group of
grade school children recently
than any other common words
they were asked to spell.
This was revealed in a report
delivered to the 121st conven
; tion of the American Association
- for the Advancement of Science
; on the University of California
: campus.
The study of student spelling
was conducted by Dr. George C.
Kyte, professor of education at
U. C. The results of his research
A were presented tabularly, accord
X ing to the number of misspellings
'r- per grade and the number of
4 ways a word was misspelled.
The total number of spelling
errors ranged from 87 for "al
1 most" to 276 for "question."
Too Many L's
2j The number of different ways
of misspelling a word ranged
" from four for "to" to 152 for,
you guessed it, "question."

to spell it "qustion and older
ones most often made it "quis
tion." : Kyte believes much of the
value of his study is his finding
that many of the errors can be
anticipated and thus corrected.
For example, three typical mis
spellings of "begin" include 139
of the 245 cases. In some cases
the factors causing misspellings
are inferable, such as a tendency
to omit silent vowels at the end
of "before," and "more." The
erroneous doubling of the con
sonant "allmost," "allready,"
!'carefull also was common.

RUDE AWAKENING
' Los Angeles U.R) Army Sgt
Antonio R. Hernandez, 29, got a
rude awakening yesterday by
the passing of a switch engine
and 11 freight cars. They passed
directly over him after he fell
asleep on some railroad tracks
Hernandez was treated for, a
ecratch on his face.

A paid announcement in one
of the Washington papers said a

from Liverpool aboard the barge
Bessie and the schooner Ann D.
There were 3500 sacks of salt
for sale at auction.
There was a big controversy
over a proposed appropriation
to "patch up the so-called long
bridge over the Potomac." There
was no quarrel about need for
fixing the. holes in the bridge,
but there were some hot words
about what it would cost. Around
$12,000. '
Wages Insured
A bill was introduced and
passed in the Senate to "secure
wages, for seamen in case oi
wrecks."
. One local newspaper waxed
editorially on a resolution passed
by the House on Feb. 12. The
resolution called for the re
mainder of the session to hold all
discussions in committee of the
whole "and confined to the sub
ject under consideration, "except
during evening sessions." The
paper said it thought that was
right noble and that the mover of
the resolution, a Mr. Stratton,
was entitled "to the thanks of
the country for this timely and
proper restriction."

was trying . to sell a book on
"Duels and Dueling" for $1.25.

A bill was beinlbnsidered in
the House of Representatives to
provide more efficient discipline
for the Navy. It will be re
called, said the sponsor of the
measure, "that in 1850, flogging
of seamen was abolished and no
substitute was adopted. The ef
ficiency of the service was some
what impaired, thereby."
Scale Not Mentioned
The Senate passed a bill to in
crease the salary of justices of
the Supreme Court, but there
was no mention of the new pay
scale. And there was a bill up to
give Commodore Matthew C.
Perry $25,000 for his diplomatic
services in "opening a commun
ication with Japan."
The 33rd Congress also was
concerned about a bill to au
thorize a railroad to the Pacific.
Some thought it was a fine
thing. Others said it was to cost
too much money and one repre
sentative said that would be too
long to ride on a train, anyhow.
There was a hot issue in the
House over a small appropria
tion for transportation of mail
by ocean steamers. Tempers
rose and one congressman arose
in wrath and allowed that he
was dead against it, for personal
reasons.
He. said he didn't know any
body on the other side of the
world , and even if he did, he
didn't see why the American
taxpayers . should have . to pay
money to "fix it up for me so
that I would write to him."
It was a pretty interesting
week here 100 years ago.
McCarthy Declared
Through as Power
Los Angeles (U.P.) Colum
nist Drew Pearson said last night
that Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy
(R-Wis.), was "through as a pot
ent power in American poli
tics." '
Pearson, speaking,' at Sinai
Temple, admitted that in 1950
McCarthy's Lincoln Day speech
was "famous" because McCarthy
attacked alleged Communists in
the State Department.
"The penetrating eye of the
television camera showed up Mc
Carthy to the people for what he
was," Pearson declared, refer
ring to the Army-McCarthy hear
ings last year.
The outspoken columnist also
predicted that President Eisen
hower would not run for a second
term and that Vice-President
Richard M. Nixon would not be
renominated whether Mr. Ei
senhower runs or not

McKay, president of the Church
of Latter-day Saints of Jesus
Christ, leaves for home today
after making a 45,000 mile trip
visiting church missions in the
South Pacific.
McKay's Pan American World
Airways plane will arrive in San
Francisco at 7 p.m. tonight.
The 81-year-old church leader
was accompanied by his wife
and, other church dignitaries dur
ing his six-week tour of South
Pacific islands, New Zealand and
Australia.
McKay climaxed his six-day
visit to Hawaii yesterday by ad
dressing a gathering of 3000
persons at a quarterly meeting
of the Oahu Stake in the gleam
ing white Mormon tabernacle in
Honolulu.
4-H Club News
Club Meets
The Sew and Sew 4-H club
met at the home of Eileen Ball
ance Feb. 5. Miss Brooks visited
us. We did not have a lesson, but
had a contest on judging. Miss
Brooks told us about the 4-H
camp, the 4-H talent show, and
the 4-H County Fair and State
Fair. Refreshments were served
by Eileen. The next meeting
will be held March 19.

Two Die in Crash
North of Bend
Bend (U.R) Two persons
were killed in a head-on colli
sion early Sunday eight miles
north of here. Six more persons
were injured, five of them se
riously, in the crash.
Dead are Ramon R. Rodri
ques, 25, and Lazaro G. Resen
dez, 53, bath of Outlook, Wash.
Two other occupants of the
death car were taken to St.
Charles hospital with multiple
fractures. They are Mrs. Baslia
Flores, 34, and her son Anto
lin. 16, of Sunnyside, Wash.
Three of the four occupants
of the other car in the crash
were also in St. Charles hospital
in serious condition. They are
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Dacus and
Mrs. William E. Lamborn, all of
Redmond, Ore. Mrs. Lamborn's
husband was treated for minor
injuries and discharged.
State police are still investi
gating the accident.
BURGLAR CAPTURED
Chicago '(U.R) Albert B,
Staebler, 46, and his family re
turned home from visiting
friends to find all the doors
locked. Then btaebler saw a
light in an upstairs bedroom and
went to call police. Police said
Staebler was locked out of his
own home by the burglar. The
intruder was captured as he
dashed out the back door.

Suspicious Father
Makes Home Unhappy
How can one convince a sus
picious person that his doubts
are unreasonable? A young girl
writes:
(Q) "When my older sisters
and I try to explain something
io our father, ht immediately
doubts us. He does the same
thing with our mother. An
example: My sisters were in
vited io a shower to be given
just three blocks from our
home. They could not ask my
father if they could go, be
cause he was away en bus
iness at the time. The shower
was en a Saturday night and
it was the night the clocks
were changed. They got home
an hour later than they are
supposed to because they had
not changed the elocks in the
house where the shower was
held.
"When they explained it
to my father, he was furious,
veiled at them and called
ihem all sorts of names. This
happens all the time and it is
making nervous wrecks of all
of us. Do you think I am
wrong for wanting all of this
to end so we can have a happy
home?"
(A) Every child as well as
every adult is entitled . to a
happy home. Your father's
doubting of your word and his
unreasonable reactions may
stem from the fact that he senses
the whole family is united
aginst him.
If you want your father to
treat you better and stop doubt
ing everything you tell him, you
must first con
vince him that
you are fond

Jet Bomber Crew Sought in Canada
Winnipeg, Man. (U.R) A
dozen planes criss-crossed an
area 125 miles northwest of The
Pas, Man., today seeking two of
four crewmen of an American
jet bomber that exploded and
crashed.
, The pilot and co-pilot of the
plane, Lt., Col. Kenneth McGrew
and Capt.; Lester E. Epton, both
33 and from Riverside, Calif., re
cuperated at the RCAF hospital
here. They were rushed from
the crash scene by Canadian Air
Force para-rescue teams,

the navigator, Ma j. Robert D.
Dowdy, and Capt. Thomas Pitt
man, also of Riverside.
The six-jet B47 was on a rou
tine round-trip out of March
Field, Calif., Saturday when a
starboard engine caught fire. It
exploded and hurled pieces
through the fusilage which in
turn also exploded, the survivors
said.
