Schwenke and his wife and their six count 'em six chil dren live for weeks at a time in a 21-foot trailer. , The Schwenkes are show peo ple. Schwenke, 35, and three of his youngsters form a novelty balancing act. Well-Adjusted Crew They play fairs, conventions, sport shows and the like, and they've appeared with Ed Sulli van and Bob Hope. Their living arrangements on the road might give some people claustrophobia, but the Sch wenkes are a well-adjusted crew and they never seem to get in each other s way, The close cooperation in which they live seems to carry over into their act. The kids seem to have the utmost confidence that their dad will catch and balance them, no matter how difficult the feat. No Privacy in Trailer The family's compact trailer has a bunk bed which sleens four and a studio couch at the other' end which sleeps three youngsters. The baby sleeps in a folding bed in the. "hall." The $4000 trailer has a bottled gas stove and a refrigerator com- -Ml a single unit, all Ull heater, a six-volt electrical sys tem with fluorescent lighting, running water and a special 'wardrobe closet. Schwenke uses his oldest son. "Bumpy" 11, Robert, 6, and Su san, 5, in his act. Sometimes he uses the baby, 15-month-old Sandra, "when she's in the mood." - ' 10, and Jon, 8, are prop boys. Schwenke's wife, Lucille, cooks and takes care of the children, and makes the costumes. Best of Health "We're all in the best of health," ' Schwenke said. "1 think it's my wife's cooking. And in the winter the kids line up each day for cod liver oil." The youngsters are enrolled in a correspondence. ,jiJOQl which ' furnishes the books, pam per, pencils and the like. The classes are taught by Schwenke and his wife. The American Municipal asso ciation conducted a survey that showed civil defense programs in cties of more than 400,000 population vary greatly. It said the variety of interest and concern cannot be laid to indifference on the part of those cities whose programs are rela' tively small. . . . Schwenke, former middle weight national arrfeteur weight lifting champion, has been in show business nine years. He started a Tjalancing act with the oldest boy. As the other" children arrived, the act "just sort of grew" into its present format. The Schwenkes pull their trailer with a four-door Cadil lac complete with jump seats. When their busy schedule gives them a break, they go home to Milwaukee. There they really spread out. Their permanent , home . is a $9,000, two-story trailer with four bedrooms, a 14-foot living room and a 10V foot kitchen. HOW TO PREVENT WAR Kansas City, Mo. Cigarette Smoking Said To Produce Action on Heart Chicago (U.R) A report by four doctors in the Journal of the American Medical Associa tion claims cigarette smoking produces definite and immedi ate effect on the action of the heart. The doctors making the report were Henry I. Russek, Virgil J. Dorset, and Burton L. Zohman, all of the U.S.. Public-Health Service, and ; Dr. Insidore E. Buff, Charleston, W. Va. " Direct Danger Not Proven They . said evidence did not prove that smoking presents a direct danger to heart disease patients but that smoking is bad for them because of undesirable effects on the heart. The doctors said smokine by heart disease patients appeared to show up heart muscle weak ness by blood vessels through out,, the body. 5The "tobacco heart" patient gets a poisonous effect from nicotine, they . said.. 400 ' Persons Tested Dr. Buff said he tested 400 normal persons and found heart action changes in 10 per cent. He said he could not determine whether those who , showed changes would ever develop heart disease from smoking, but believed they should stop smok ing. : ' ' Timothy V. Hartnett, chair man of the Tobacco Industry Re search Council, : said in N&w York that $1,000,000 had been appropriated to help finance in dependent research. - He said the committee, estab lished by large tobacco corpora tions, was going forward with research into various phases of the relationship between tobacco and human health.
