(International) Typographical Error ' Confuses News Story A typographical error in a Mail Tribune story yesterday re sulted in the omission of -the name of a Medford woman, and confused the meaning of a por tion of the story. The article concerned the re turn of Medford delegates from the state Disabled Veterans con vention in La Grande. The para graph which was in, error should have said: Mrs. Hazel Vandermarlc was elected senior vice commander of the ladies state DAV auxil iary, and Dorothy Simmons was elected color guard. PHONE 2-5336 or 2-5897 School Board 0Krs Purchase of Land For New Building The Medford school board last night authorized purchase of eight acres of property north of town as a site for future con struction of an elementary school building. The site was sold by Whittle and Mclntyre for a price of $5,000. No construction is planned on the property at the present time, according to Superintendent E. H. Hedrick. The purchase "is in line with the school board's pol icy of obtaining sites in advance of present needs to avoid trans portation problems at a future date," Hedrick said.. In Walking Distance This policy keeps all schools within walking distance for school children, the superintend ent said. The property, which is located on Whittle avenue near McAndrews road, is about 1V4 miles from Lincoln school and 1 23 miles from Roosevelt school. The board also appointed six pew teachers and accepted the resignation of Mrs. Edna Chand ler, elementary teacher at Roos evelt school for the past two years. ' Primary teachers elected by trie board are Marilyn Tarbet, Portland, a 1952 graduate of Lewis and Clark college; Mrs. Trudy Williams, Monmouth, a 1952 graduate of Oregon Col lege of Education; and Marilyn Matheny, Ashland, a 1952 grad uate of Southern Oregon college. High school teachers elected by the board are Betty Jean Moody, Chelan, Wash., to teach English; and Don V.s Hanning, Long Beach, Calif., to teach ma chine shop. Miss Moody is a graduate of Northern Idaho col lege and Hanning holds a junior engineer s license from the Mer chant Marine academy. ATHLETE MAKES GOOD. June II, 1IS2 . irllBUNE ELEVEH Council Approves Nine Paving Jobs On City Streets Nine city streets paving pro jects were given preliminary ap proval last night by the Medford city council. No hearing dates on the projects were set by the council. The streets Involved and the amount to be paved include Ben nett street from the end of the street to Crater Lake avenue, 850 feet; Crown avenue from Oregon terrace to Berkeley way, 1,340 feet; Welch street from the railroad tracks to Jackson street, 500 feet; Haven street from Oak to Woodstock streets, 600 feet. Others Listed Also included in the group are South Peach street from 13 th street to Dakota avenue, 565 feet; Haven street from Wood stock to Grape streets, 300 feet; Taylor street from the end of the street to Myrtle street, 175 feet, and Kenneway drive, from Main street to Woodlawn drive 480 feet. Also approved was the paving of an alley between 14th street and Dakota avenue between Newtown and King streets. . City . officials reported this morning that the "seam" be tween new concrete aprons and paving on the portion of East Main stjeet which was recently widened, will be covered with blacktop surface in the near fu ture. Sizick ga thered up the reptiles and sent the motorist on his way, Circuit Court Asked To Void Sentence Cecil Cannon, 2827 Buckshot road, who was fined $15 and sentenced to five days in jail on June 8 after being convicted of petty larceny, has asked the cir cuit court to void the district court sentence. He charges a "manifest error" in that the defendant was de nied the right of appeal. He also alleges the sentence was "harsh and excessive" for the misde meanor, and that the sentence must be either a fine or jail term, or both. The first sentence by the dis trict" court was a fine of $50 and five days in Jail and the tine was reduced to $15 on the recom mendation of Deputy District Attorney Bob Dickey, Cannon's appeal said, "for the purpose of preventing an appeal . . . and that the court erred In giving said reduction." The case involved the theft of one pound of butter from the Big-Y market.
