Box 243 Shady Cove, Oregon Soviet Allied Group Member Leaves Japan Tokyo, Sunday, May 28 (U.R) The Soviet member of the Allied Council for Japan. Lieut, Kuzma Derevyanko, sailed for Russia today with 46 Soviet staff members and their fami lies. American diplomats speculat ed that the departure may mean a major shake-up is taking place in the Soviet mission here. Allied council officials said Derevyanko had informed the mission by letter that he was leaving, but they said the letter did not indicate whether he would return. The Russian group left on the same vessel that brought an al most equal number of replace ments. American officials said the action may involve only routine replacements of staff members, some of whom have been here a long period. Derevyenko's top advisers ap peared to have left with him. Maids at the homes of some of the leading Russians said their regular employers had "left with Derevyanko." Klamath Area Girl Reported Drowned Klamath Falls, Ore., May 27 (U.R) Brenda Jean Adams, sev en-year-old daughter of Mr. andj Mrs. Jack L. Adams, drowned at the Raymond logging camp, 67 miles north of here, today when she fell into a logging pond. j Her father is foreman at the camp. Witnesses reported the - child fell as she ran along the pond's edge. May 27 OI.R) The Rasor Lodging company, principal loser in a fire which swept 650 acres of timberland east of here Friday, also lost a personal injury suit in circuit court today. A jury returned a $27,976.65 verdict against the company in favor of Manuel T. Cox who charged that injuries he sus tained May 6, 1949, were due to company negligence. Cox suffered a fractured skull when he was struck by flying debris after a line bed became fouled and snapped under the strain. A former high climber and hook tender, he alleged the company did not maintain a warning whistle he could hear. Circuit Judge G. F. Skipworth said he thought the damage ver dict against the Rasor company was the largest ever won in Lane county since 'about 1912." Light Plane's Pilot And Passenger Dead North Bend, Ore., May 27 (U.R) The body of Kenneth Murray, 26, was recovered this morning by coast guardsmen near where the light plane he was piloting crashed into Coos Bay last night. The body of Vernon Buzzard, 41, a passenger from North Bend, was recovered by coast guardsmen shortly before dark ness had forced postponement of the search for Murray, who was piloting the plane, accord ing to Brewer Mills, Coos coun ty coroner. An eye witness said the plane, a two-seated Piper Pal, was stunting when the accident oc curred. The plane failed to pull out of a loop and crashed into the water with the wings fold ing up at about 200 feet. The plane was completely de molished and both bodies were thrown clear of the wreckage, the witness said. minutes after they allegedly robbed an Ontario drugstore. Truman Congratulates Washington, May 27 (U.R) Secretary of State Dean Acheson returned to the capital today, and was congratulated by Presi dent Truman on "the most suc cessful international conference I think since Potsdam." Acheson replied that he was "very touched" by Mr. Truman's greeting and said: "I have done my best to carry out your in structions." Mr. Truman drove out t o National airport to meet Ache son on his arrival here from New Libel Jury Dismissed After Not Agreeing Hartford, Conn., May 27 (U.R) A jury of eight women and four men which tried for more than ten hours to decide whether Mrs. Hester R. McCul lough libeled entertainers Larry Adler and Paul Draper by call ing them pro-communists and traitors, was dismissed by Fed eral Judge J. Joseph Smith to day when It reported It was hopelessly deadlocked. Mrs. McCullough, who sobbed when the jury reported the first of its three disagreements late last night, was shaken by the jury's indecision. "Naturally," she said, "I am greatly disappointed. I know however, that the members of the jury gave the case their most earnest and careful considera tion. I am grateful to Judge Smith for his patience and im partial consideration of the trial. "I still feel that communism is the greatest threat to our American way of life." Acheson on His Work York where he had debarked from the liner Brittania several hours earlier. At New York, Acheson said that he was confident that his top level conferences in Europe produced "solid achievement" toward peace and that the west is "gaining in military strength." The number of victims In the tragedy was reduced Fri day night by Coroner A. L. Bro die who said a rccheck of the charred bodies showed that only 32 died instead of the 33 prev iously reported. All but one victim burned to death in the new-type high-speed street car that ploughed into a big gasoline truck. The other victim was the truck driver who died in his cab. The street car wss one of about 3.U00 new trolleys and buses that the Chicago Transit authority put into service since it took over in 1947 from the bankrupt privately-owned Chi cago Surface Lines and Rapid Transit Elevated System.
