"The main reason that we refer to alcoholism as a dis ease." says a member of Alco holics Anonymous, voicing the same opinion as many other members have voiced in let-., tors writing to me concerning an article printed in this col umn, in which I said the alco holic doesn't HAVE to get drunk, he merely chooses to get drunk "is to serve as a constant reminder to ourselves that we can never again drink sensibly or socially." The main reason why we doc tors, or some of us at any rate, refer to alcoholism as self-indulgence or a bad habit is that the alcoholic doesn't have to drink but merely chooses to drink. Some alcoholics prove this by deciding to stop drinking and stopping. More alcoholics do so by virtue of the courage and in spiration they get from Alcohol ics Anonymous, God bless them. Did you ever hear of an -epileptic who stopped having seizures because he decided to have no more? Or a migraine victim who stopped having sick headches be cause he or she decided to have no more? Or an asthmatic who stopped having difficulty In breathing because he decided to have no more difficulty? Then there's the change of life. From the anxious inquiries I receive, many of them from women of good education, as ed ucations go I gather that many young women look forward to this so-called "crisis" with mor bid anticipation. Worse still, some of the voluble psycholo gists, psyschosomatologists and paper neurologists are busily promoting the concept of the "male climacteric" a "change of life" in men that gives the so-and-so's an alibi or an excuse for their bad behavior after for ty, or for being caught at it. It Is an indisputable fact that most women experience no dis turbance of health, comfort, per sonality, personal appearance or any other feminine characteristic at the menopause. They simply cease to menstruate, and that's all. Therefore it is Just plain stupied for a young woman to approach middle age with any fear or anxiety about the "cri sis." Thera isn't any "crisis" If the woman has had a fair edu cation. As for the alcoholics who Ilka to blama their drinking on a mysterious "disease," they be long in the same category with mature men who choose to blame their misconduct on a myste rious "change of life." For their own good, in the long run, we should let them know that we are onto them and their trick psychologists. Wives "As to wives." says a Califor nia husband, "they can be class ed as home makers, home mana gers and house cleaners. A home maker is a wife who puts the comfort, peace, quiet and con tentment above all else. A home manger is a domestic efficiency expert. She runs her house like a business office and has a touch of the slave driver to her. A house cleaner is a wife who is al ways squawking about how things should be in order. She drives her husband wild asking him: Why did you do this? Why did you do that? Why aren't you neat like other men? And so on, far Into the night. A pitiful fig ure, indeed, is the poor wretch whose wife is the house cleaner type." Passing By Greer Garson. My favorite film actress on and off the screen.
