Soviet Allied Group
Member Leaves Japan
Tokyo, Sunday, May 28
(U.R) The Soviet member of the
Allied Council for Japan. Lieut,
Kuzma Derevyanko, sailed for
Russia today with 46 Soviet
staff members and their fami
lies. American diplomats speculat
ed that the departure may mean
a major shake-up is taking place
in the Soviet mission here.
Allied council officials said
Derevyanko had informed the
mission by letter that he was
leaving, but they said the letter
did not indicate whether he
would return.
The Russian group left on the
same vessel that brought an al
most equal number of replace
ments. American officials said the
action may involve only routine
replacements of staff members,
some of whom have been here
a long period.
Derevyenko's top advisers ap
peared to have left with him.
Maids at the homes of some of
the leading Russians said their
regular employers had "left
with Derevyanko."

Rasor Logging Co.
Loses Court Case
Eugene, Ore.. May 27 OI.R)
The Rasor Lodging company,
principal loser in a fire which
swept 650 acres of timberland
east of here Friday, also lost a
personal injury suit in circuit
court today.
A jury returned a $27,976.65
verdict against the company in
favor of Manuel T. Cox who
charged that injuries he sus
tained May 6, 1949, were due
to company negligence.
Cox suffered a fractured skull
when he was struck by flying
debris after a line bed became
fouled and snapped under the
strain. A former high climber
and hook tender, he alleged the
company did not maintain a
warning whistle he could hear.
Circuit Judge G. F. Skipworth
said he thought the damage ver
dict against the Rasor company
was the largest ever won in
Lane county since 'about 1912."
