Eagle Point and Ashland probably will play an even battle with perhaps the Grizzlies having an edge. : Bad weather last week-end prevented Eagle Point from play ing at Klamath Falls and Grants Pass at Illinois Valley on Friday. The same troubles besought the quintets Saturday when Ashland was slated to play at Klamath Falls and Central Point at Kerby. Medford defeated Central Point 67 to 32 last Friday night and lost to Grants Pass here Sat urday 48 to 43 In the only games played. Beavers Play WSC Series Corvallls, Jan. 19 Oregon State's defending PCC champion ship basketball team now faces Its stlffest test of the campaign i the gruelling four-gnmes-ln-tlve-nights invasion of the Inland Empire. The Beavers, who looked by far their sharpest of the winter in whipping Oregon, 65-49, last Friday, open their road trip with a return series against powerful Washington State at Pullman Friday and Saturday. From Pullman, Coach Slats Gill and his men will move over to nearby Moscow for the Initial series against Idaho next Mon day and Tuesday nights. Feller Gets $50,000 New York, Jan. 19 (U.R) The biggest pay cut his bosses could possibly give him $20,000 left 31-year-old Hobby ener in a grim mood today, deter mined "to regain my previous form." The former boy wonder's fast ball cooled off a lot last season, and so did the enthusiasm of the Cleveland In d i an s for giving him a huge suliiry. His 1949 contract for about $70,000 was trimmed to $50,000 for the com ing campaign. That's still not peasant's pay but it's a far cry from the $90,000 that Bullet Bobby earned when his "fast one was mow ing down the batters. The Indian bosses, who took over their Job this winter by buying out Bill Veeck, actually cut Feller's pay as much as they could. Under baseball law, no salary may be sliced more than 25 per cent. Feller's cut was more than that, but the explanation is that his 1949 pay Included bonuses this year the bonuses are out. PORTLAND U. SLATED Seattle. Jan. 19 (U.R) The Seattle university basketball team readied itself today for its second invasion of Oregon with a two-night stand against Port land university Saturday and Sunday. Second game at 8:15 will put Brownie's Plumbing against American Fruit. No out of town games were scheduled for this evening. Crazy-Swayze team of league 1 went into a three-way tie for second place at the end of the first half by downing Medco 57 to 48 at the junior high last night. Prospect Wins 39-36 Prospect defeated Groceteria 39 to 36 in a nip-and-tuck game as the second part of last night's junior high doubleheadcr with the eventual winners leading 18 to 15 at the half. Milkowski paced Groceteria with 13 points and Perrine led Prospect with 23 points. The victory last night by Swayze's team tied it with Med co and Butte Falls for second place behind league leading Rogue River. The trio have lost two and won five while the Rogue River town team has won six and lost one in the first half which ended last evening. High point man for Medco last night was Lovenborg with about 22 points and matching him for the Crazy-Swayze quintet was Apitz with the same number. Medco held an 18 to 16 lead at the halftime whistle. Snead Trounces Hogan In Los Angeles Open; Golf Course 'Foggy' Los Angeles, Jan. 19 (U.R) Sam Snead spoiled the storybook ending to one of sport's great comebacks ond in the process established himself today as a leading candidate for golf's play er of the year accolade. No matter how heavy the sen timent favored game little Ben Hogan in his return from the verge of death, Snead's links mastery with clubs of Iron and nerves of steel merited top ap plause after their 18-hole play off for first money in the Los Angeles open tournament. Snead trounced Bantam Ben by four strokes, 72 to 76, on the foggy par 71 Riviera Country club course. BOWLING COMMERCIAL LEAGUE William Smith took high in dividual series honors when he rolled a 554 during the Commer cial Bowling league weekly com petition Inst night at the Med ford Bowling lanes. Don Ward was given high individual game award for his 212 pintail. Team high series went to Med ford Motors with its 2,512 while Eagles lodge gained high team game with 892. The only game play ed last week saw Gold Hill edge Jacksonville 34 to 29. Butte Falls and Rogue River continue to lead the conference with two victories and no de feats for each team. Games scheduled tomorrow will find Butte Falls at Jackson ville, Gold Hill at St. Mary's CP Netters Top G rovers Central Point. Jan. 19 Cen tral Point's seventh and eighth grade basketball teams will play their second games in as many nights when they meet Grants Pass junior high quintets on the Central Point floor starting at 7 p. m. today. Last evening the eighth grad ers from Central Point kept their record intact but played the most ragged game of the year in downing the Oak Grove school eighth grade quintet 31 to 12 on the Pointers' floor. The C. P. team indicated it needed more team play. High Scorers Noted Marvin Bohnert tipped in eight and Gordon Carrigan sev en to lead the Pointers, while McDonald caged five and Gott Ihrce to pace Oak Grove in the nth grade contest. Jentral Point also captured lust night's seventh grade clash with Oak Grove by taking an easy 44 to 7 decision. Ernest Parent was high point man for C. P. in this contest when he tipped in 10 points, fol lowed by Melvin Harsh, who caged nine. McKnight with four, McNeil with two led Oak Grove. First game at 7 p. m. today will see the Grants Pass and Central Point eighth graders play followed about 8:15 by the ninth grade quintets. Ski Champ Hans Holaas Leaves For East Meet Eugene, Ore., Jan. 10 (U.R) Hans Holaas, national cross-coun try ski champion, today was en route to Berlin, N. H., to com pete in the Nansen Ski club na-1 tional tournament scheduled for Saturday. ! Holaas won the northwest "A" j division title at Snoqualmie Pass, j Wash., two weeks ago. C, Jan. 19 (U.R) Two platoon football, the pro gram salesman's delight, moved into its second befuddling year today as the National Collegiate Athletic association rules com mittee made free substitutions freer than ever. The hawkers who yell, "you can't tell a platoon without a program," were concerned late last season when some coaches complained about the rush hour subway scene enacted on the field -ach time the ball changed hands. Another Year Needed However, the rules committee announced last night that anoth er year's,experience is necessary to evaluate the rule and so it was left on the books. Furthermore, the committee added its approval to unlimited substitution any time the clock is running, just so the sub gets into the game within the 25 seconds allowed for the huddle. This means that the platoons will have platoons. Under last year's rules, a pla toon was forced to stay in the game until time was out or the ball changed hands again. The coin toss will be made 10 minutes before the kickoff. This will allow time to announce the starting lineup after a coach decides whether to start his of fensive or defensive platoon. 2. A 15-yard penalty will be given for roughing the place kick holder as well as for rough ing the kicker. If on' an extra point the point is good, the roughing team still will be pan alized on the ensuing kickoff. Clock Starts Again 3. After time outs, the clock will start running again when the ball is ready for play, not when it is snapped. 4. If a hand or forearm is used in blocking an opponent, it must be kept below the opponent's shoulders and must be in contact with his body during the entire block.
