NICHOLS United Prati future Wrilw Washington, Jan. 19 (U.R The public transportation people In Washington offer all sorts of inducements for folks to ride. Many street cars and buses have radios which give with music, news, and the time. A 1 T of t h e public carriers have fasci nating adver tisements asted eve- Hirnun Nichols high to attract the strap-hangers. During a 40-minute ride home a man can get a liberal educa tion. In the bus that goes out my way, attractive ads practically take a person by the hand and lead him from the cradle to the grave. One notice, paid for by a dairy advises that without milk from this certain cow barn life will be dull, at best, and maybe even fruitless. Another placard, done in brief yellow, says that you can't miss pulling up bright-eyed and healthy at 40, where life is sup posed to begin if, of course, you remember to down the juice of a lemon in water every 'day. One ad shocks the bus-riding public in big black letters with: "These folks are healthy. Are you?" The artist pictures the head of a family along with his brood of six or so. The puniest looking guy and the sickest looking kids you ever saw. I forgot who paid for the ad. No Trouble To Borrow A loan company has a cutie in colors suggesting that it's no trouble to borrow from $50 to $1,000 "on your signature alone." The picture shows a happy group pulling up to a vine-covered rambler home in a block-long limousine. The daddy of the house lets out a sigh and says: "Look, kids. It's all ours." There are liquor ads and beer ads. One paid notice - for some of the hard-stuff shows a man bounding out of the sack just as tne sun makes it over his window sill. He doesn't even yawn as he crawls off the mattress. "You feel like this after a night with old so-and-so whisky," the ad says. Ad For Undertaker It probably wasn't planned that way, but right next to the whisky ad was one for an under taker. It recommended you call a certain number in case of death and "get the full treat ment for as low as $200 a com plete grave opened and closed for as little as $65." The undertaker promised to put you six feet under with bet ter service than you'd get alive in. .the best hotel in town. "Sixty some services," In fact. This particular notice had been mutilated, since I first saw it. Under it was a picture of a coffin, looking pleas antly down on the bus riders with the lid open. Master In Coffin On another ride, I noticed somebody with an upside-down sense of humor had taken a knife, cut out the picture of the undertaker, cut a slit in the coffin and put the master, him self, therein. Across from this ad, was an other obviously paid for by the advertising concern which puts up the signs: "Which of these ads do you like the best?" Well, that's pretty hard to say. Junior Chamber Picks 10 Outstanding Men Chicago, Jan. 19 (U.R) Char les H. Percy, 30 year old pres ident of Bell & Howell company was named today as one of the 10 "outstanding young men of the nation for 1949" by the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was the only businessman named to the award this year and will be given a key and scroll at a banquet in Peoria, 111., next Saturday. The other nine were Kenneth S. Pitzer, director of research for the atomic energy commis sion; Theodore Roosevelt III, Pennsylvania secretary of com merce; Oklahoma Football Coach "Bud" Wilkinson: Rep. Gerald R. Ford Jr., of Michigan; Mayor Robert L. Floyd of Miami; In ventor Charles E. Hastings; Am vet President Harold Russel; At torney John Ben Sheppard, and Dr. Franklin D. Murphy of the Kansas university school of med icine Man Killed As Auto Goes Through Garage Chicago, Jan. 19 (U.R) Louis F. Solarz, 35, left his wife, Re gina, in their automobile while lie opened the garage door upon their return from a movie. Suddenly, the car snot ior ward. It pushed Solarz through the garage, knocked out the back wall, and pinned him against a I fence 30 feet away. Solarz was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. I Authorities said Mrs. Solarz would be questioned at an in quest tomorrow to determine if , she had accidentally sieppea on the accelerator instead of the brake. AIR POCKET BLAMED Madrid, Spain, Jan. 19 (U.R) Officials blamed an air pocket today for the crash of a military transport plane - yesterday in. which 16 persons were killed.
