to a slender three percentage
point lead in the central division
of the National Basketball, as
sociation today chiefly because
they "never look a gift horse in
the mouth.
The Royals marked up a 70
to 69 victory over the Tri-Citles
Blackhawks last night In Ho
line, 111. As far as field goal
shootii? was concerned, the
Hawks should have won Hand
ily because they scored 27 field
ers to only 16 for Rochester.
But the Royals had the Midas
touch from the free throw line,
sinking 38 out of 48 attempts,
an .825 average.
Minneapolis stayed hot on the
Royals' heels with a 76 to 68
victory over Washington.

Feller Gets

The biggest pay cut his bosses
could possibly give him $20,000
left 31-year-old Hobby ener
in a grim mood today, deter
mined "to regain my previous
form."
The former boy wonder's fast
ball cooled off a lot last season,
and so did the enthusiasm of the
Cleveland In d i an s for giving
him a huge suliiry. His 1949
contract for about $70,000 was
trimmed to $50,000 for the com
ing campaign.
That's still not peasant's pay
but it's a far cry from the
$90,000 that Bullet Bobby earned
when his "fast one was mow
ing down the batters.
The Indian bosses, who took
over their Job this winter by
buying out Bill Veeck, actually
cut Feller's pay as much as they
could. Under baseball law, no
salary may be sliced more than
25 per cent.
Feller's cut was more than
that, but the explanation is that
his 1949 pay Included bonuses
this year the bonuses are out.

39 to 36 in a nip-and-tuck game
as the second part of last night's
junior high doubleheadcr with

to 15 at the half. Milkowski
paced Groceteria with 13 points
and Perrine led Prospect with
23 points.
The victory last night by
Swayze's team tied it with Med
co and Butte Falls for second
place behind league leading
Rogue River. The trio have lost
two and won five while the
Rogue River town team has won
six and lost one in the first half
which ended last evening.
High point man for Medco last
night was Lovenborg with about
22 points and matching him for
the Crazy-Swayze quintet was
Apitz with the same number.
Medco held an 18 to 16 lead
at the halftime whistle.

Last evening the eighth grad
ers from Central Point kept
their record intact but played
the most ragged game of the year
in downing the Oak Grove school
eighth grade quintet 31 to 12 on
the Pointers' floor. The C. P.
team indicated it needed more
team play.
High Scorers Noted
Marvin Bohnert tipped in
eight and Gordon Carrigan sev
en to lead the Pointers, while
McDonald caged five and Gott
Ihrce to pace Oak Grove in the
nth grade contest.
Jentral Point also captured
lust night's seventh grade clash
with Oak Grove by taking an
easy 44 to 7 decision.
Ernest Parent was high point
man for C. P. in this contest
when he tipped in 10 points, fol
lowed by Melvin Harsh, who

Two Platoon Football
Retained By Colleges

Two platoon football, the pro
gram salesman's delight, moved
into its second befuddling year
today as the National Collegiate
Athletic association rules com
mittee made free substitutions
freer than ever.
The hawkers who yell, "you
can't tell a platoon without a
program," were concerned late
last season when some coaches
complained about the rush hour
subway scene enacted on the
field -ach time the ball changed
hands.
Another Year Needed
However, the rules committee
announced last night that anoth
er year's,experience is necessary
to evaluate the rule and so it
was left on the books.
Furthermore, the committee
added its approval to unlimited
substitution any time the clock
is running, just so the sub gets
into the game within the 25
seconds allowed for the huddle.
This means that the platoons
will have platoons.
Under last year's rules, a pla
toon was forced to stay in the
game until time was out or the
ball changed hands again.

10 minutes before the kickoff.
This will allow time to announce
the starting lineup after a coach
decides whether to start his of

2. A 15-yard penalty will be
given for roughing the place
kick holder as well as for rough
ing the kicker. If on' an extra
point the point is good, the
roughing team still will be pan
alized on the ensuing kickoff.
Clock Starts Again
3. After time outs, the clock
will start running again when
the ball is ready for play, not
when it is snapped.
4. If a hand or forearm is used
in blocking an opponent, it must
be kept below the opponent's
shoulders and must be in contact
with his body during the entire
block.
