Calif, VITAMINS AND There is considerable evidence to show that shortages of vita mins C, B-complex and D may favor develop ment of one or another chron ic joint trouble which is called a r t h r i tis or r h e u matism. There is some evidence, too, that relief and even recovery from chronic -I g a a r t n r l us or Jbsiassaaiwiiisal chronic rhcu- Dr. Brady matism may be promoted or speeded by an op timal daily intake of these vita mins. By optimal I mean at least three times as much of the vitamin as may be required daily to maintain good nutrition and prevent manifestations of deficiency. Now just how much of each of these vitamins does the average adult require daily to maintain good nutrition and prevent defi ciency manifestations (symp toms, complaints)? Nutrition authorities agree that the daily minimum require ment of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is 30 miligrams. That is the amount of vitamin C in, say one half of a fresh tomato, one quarter of a lemon, one-half of an orange, one ounce of raw cab bage, or not less than six ounces (small glassful) of commercially canned tomato juice, or 3V4 ounces of raw turnip. The minimum daily require ment of vitamin B-complex is difficult to determine because the various components (Bl or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin, nia cin etc.) vary considerably in their relative proportions in dif- Muslc. Foods with highest vitamin B complex value are pork loin, pork liver, calf liver, peanuts, oatmeal, plain wheat, eggs, fresh peas, yeast (dried brewers' yeast). Dry yeast powder Is not ordinarily a food, but it doesn't taste too bad and has been sup plied by grocery stores in the south as a staple (selling for a moderate price) for use in the diet to prevent and cure pellag ra, f The nutrition authorities still disagree about the minimum daily requirement of vitamin D, but various authorities estimate it at from 400 to 1000 U.S.P.XII units. Whole milk, cream, but ter, egg yolk, oysters, and fresh or canned herring, sardines, tuna and salmon are practically the only food sources of vitamin D, and these hardly supply enough to maintain good nutri tion. In order to prevent rickets it is now customary to give in fants and young children a daily ration of vitamin D in the form of fish liver oil or some concen trate of it or tasteless synthetic vitamin D. QUESTIONS & ANSWES Never Mind What causes high blood pressure? What to do for it? What should It be at age of 63? Does diet help? (Mn. L. J.) Answer You might as well ask what causes high temperature or high pulse or rapid or heavy breath ing. Only advice I can give you is, leave the blood pressure to the judgment of your physician. If there is anything the matter, I assure you it is a waste of time and money to take or do anything that purports to be good for "blood pressure." Maybe you can get a better understanding of it from the booklet "CVD" for copy send ten cents and stamped self addressed envelope.
