Your Hsalth and It's Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Readen should address Inquiries to: Dr William Brady. 265 El Camino Beverly Hill. Calil. Church Notices The compromise you suggest-, ed July 23 does NOT suit roe, as it changes the terms of your prize contest. There are laws to pro tect the public against such fraud. The an nouncement of a contest with terms and prize offered must be fol lowed at the close of the contest by public a n the name and winner. It is TWO OF US MAY BE WHONQ Dr. Brady nouncement of address of the neither legal nor sporting to al ter the terms to suit your whim after entries have been submit ted. (M.O.) First I offered to contribute S100 to the Red Cross or other philanthropy my teacher might indicate if any one would give me a menu for free meals which will supply not merely the fat, carbohydrate and protein but also all of the vitamins and min erals one needs for good nutri tion. I specified that the diet list must give the quantities of all items. Following is the list submit ted by M. O. May 27, '45: Breakfast Orange Juice Two slices Whole Wheat bread Butter Two eggs, poached Canadian bacon Milk I GLASS A tkcilMj For Fine Flavored Eating, Canning or Juice COOK'S GROCERY 630 Crater Lake Rd. Ph. 3294 launch Braised Beef liver Boiled potato Green peas Cabbage and grapefruit salad Bread and Buier Chocolate cake with fudge frosting Milk Dinner Broiled salmon steak Baked sweet potato Cauliflower in cream Banana salad Mayonnaise Vanilla ice cream Milk You gave no quantities, Ma'am, and therefore your en try was disqualified. On separate sheet you sub mitted an interesting table of fractional proportions of vari ous elements, vitamins, fat, car-; bohydrate, protein and calories; yielded by most of the items in1 your menu but still your en-' try does not qualify for the; reason stated above. j For that matter, now that the contest is closed, the menu or diet for a day that I sought has not been forthcoming. I must admit, however, lliat your entry, Ma'am, seems to me one of the two that most nearly fulfill the requirements I pub lished the other (submitted by a high school girls' physical education class) here last Mon day. In your menu, Ma'am, you In clude broiled salmon steak and in the separate table you credit to 100 grams (approximately 3V ounces) of salmon 10,000 units of vitamin A, 500 units of vitamin D, 260 micrograms of thiamine (Bl), 6400 micrograms of niancin (nicotinic acid) etc. I have repeatedly cited here this statement of Dr. Norman H. Joliffe: "In order to secure the 550 international units of vitamin Bl which has been lost during the past century as a re sult of refinement in milling of wheat, one would be forced to consume tremendous and impos sible quantities of these particu lar "prote protective foods" (that is, milk, green vegetables and fruits) one would have to consume daily a combination of 625 Gm. (1.4 lbs) of fruit, 600 Gm. of potatoes, 880 Gm. (near ly 2 pounds) of other vegetables and 1,260 cc. (5 large glasses of milk. Of course, Jolliffe, even though he is recognized as an authority, may be wrong about this. But I'm banking on the soundness of his view. Whether I am right or wrong, at this writing it looks as though I should divide the prize (fifty fifty) between Mrs. M. O. who submitted the menu printed above and the high school girls' physical education class, and the additional $100 to the Amer ican Red Cross, no particular chapter unless the two win-j ners esk that it go to a parti- JacksonvlUe Presbyterian Church Lawrence H.
