For that matter, now that the
contest is closed, the menu or
diet for a day that I sought has
not been forthcoming.
I must admit, however, lliat
your entry, Ma'am, seems to me
one of the two that most nearly
fulfill the requirements I pub
lished the other (submitted by
a high school girls' physical
education class) here last Mon
day. In your menu, Ma'am, you In
clude broiled salmon steak and
in the separate table you credit
to 100 grams (approximately
3V ounces) of salmon 10,000
units of vitamin A, 500 units of
vitamin D, 260 micrograms of
thiamine (Bl), 6400 micrograms
of niancin (nicotinic acid) etc.
I have repeatedly cited here
this statement of Dr. Norman
H. Joliffe: "In order to secure
the 550 international units of
vitamin Bl which has been lost
during the past century as a re
sult of refinement in milling of
wheat, one would be forced to
consume tremendous and impos
sible quantities of these particu
lar "prote protective foods"
(that is, milk, green vegetables
and fruits) one would have to
consume daily a combination of
625 Gm. (1.4 lbs) of fruit, 600
Gm. of potatoes, 880 Gm. (near
ly 2 pounds) of other vegetables
and 1,260 cc. (5 large glasses of
milk.
Of course, Jolliffe, even
though he is recognized as an
authority, may be wrong about
this. But I'm banking on the
soundness of his view. Whether
I am right or wrong, at this
writing it looks as though I
should divide the prize (fifty
fifty) between Mrs. M. O. who
submitted the menu printed
above and the high school girls'
physical education class, and
the additional $100 to the Amer
ican Red Cross, no particular

communities of northeastern and
southwestern Oregon during the
past year, was made this week.
During the summer Mr. Ran
dall taught and supervised daily
vacation Bible schools in ten
communities in which several
hundred students gathered for
two weeks of intensive Bible
study. Bibles and Testaments
wer "distributed in the communi
ties during 189 visits to the
schools and 164- confessed the
Christian faith.
The School Union, of which
John C. Mann, Medford, is local
district vice president, estab
lishes Sunday schools in rural
communities where churches are
not located.

in Medford to take over the pas
toral duties of the First Christ
ian church.
During their year of service
here Mrs. Daniels has contribut
ed graciously to the musical and
educational programs of both the
church and the community.
The first year of their service
has seen progress in all phases
of the church's work. Indebted
ness of the church was eliminat
ed on the 60th anniversary of the

Of Pacific Battles
Receives Discharge
First Sgt. Eugene R. Birk, vet
eran of Guadalcanal, northern
Solomons and Luzon, has been
given an honorable discharge at
Fort Lewis. Ho was discharged
on the point system, having 117
points to his credit.
Sgt. Birk entered the service
Sept. 16, 1940, and went overseas
in January, 1041. He holds the
good conduct medal, purple
heart, Philippine liberation me
dal with one bronze star and
three compnign stars, American
defense service medal, Asiatic
Pacific service medal and the In
fantry combat badge.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
E. L. Birk of Phoenix, who have
another son at Corpus Christi,
Tex. He has served three years
in the navy.
