CAPTORS OF CEBU ID IE Manila, March 31 (U.R) American troops captured Cebu's burned and blasted cap ital city and speared northward today in a drive that may have overrun the Lahug airdrome. ; Cebu City, second largest city ; in the Philippines, (ell to units of the American division which : advanced five miles in one day and outflanked elaborate Japa nese pillbox fortifications on the capital's western approaches. The city, once one of the most beautiful in the Archipelago. . was damaged nearly as badly as ; Manila. The huge assault by more than 1,400 Fortresses and Lib erators, escorted by fighter planes, apparently was a bid to cripple finally the German na val facilities and U-boat fleet bases. The attacks followed up raids last night by British mosquitoes on Berlin and other targets in northwest Germany. JUNE 22 ELECTION TO COST AROUND $75,000 Salem, Ore., March 31 (U.R) The June 22 special election, when the voters will decide on the fate of the proposed 2-cent cigarette tax and the 5-mill prop erty levy, will cost around S75,- 000. it has been estimated by David O'Hara, chief of the elec tions division here. The election was called by the recent legislature to enable the state to raise $14,000,000 in the next two years for the schools of the state and for institutional building. The smoke tax would be permanent, but the property levy would be for two years only.
