More than 2,300 U. S. Eighth
Air Force planes pounded Bre

Salem, Ore., March 31 (U.R)

nlS POWER iWt
To guard the soil security of the West,
a far-reaching science of conservation
u needed.
New covet crop mixtures of grasses
and legumes . . stubble mulch ...
cross slope farming where possible .
reverting marginal crop land to per
manent pastures . . . maintaining soil
tilth to absorb and hold more moisture
these are just a few of the chal
lenging opportunities ahead.
Although some new implements are
available, many of the machines on
your farm will have to serve another
year. Be sure your equipment is ready
to meet the test. Check all your ma
chinery for worn or broken parts and
bring in your repair jobs now. Then
your equipment will be ready to roll
when the weather says "go" to an
other year of record production.
Stop in and let us help you make your
plans.

COSTLY WORD
Chicago, March 31 (U.R) A'
"the" Instead of an "a" in a city
ordinance yesterday cost Chi
cago $8,591,000. A gas company,
arguing against payment of taxes
on natural gas sales, said a city
ordinance reading "the 5 per
cent tax" particularized the
statement as referring to an 1891
franchise, expiring In 1916.
whereas an "a" would have had
an indefinite force. The court
agreed.
Sacramento, March 31 (U.R)
Federal Judge Martin I. Welsh
today set for April 10 the trial
of Mrs. Vilma Suberly, 26, who
the FBI says acquired at least
eight husbands without a com
parable number of divorces, on
two charges of using the mails to
defraud.
