Besides the dally ration of vitamin D, life in the ooen Dr. Brady air and plenty of exposure of the young child is important to encourage the growth of strong straight bones. Finally plenty of exercise, ac tive play, particularly running, riding tricycle, pushmoblle, bi cycle, horse-back and the like, aids the development of straight legs. For youths or young adults the usual operation is subcutan eous osteotomy (cutting or saw. ing the bone across through a puncture or small Incision in the skin), at the apex of the curve of the shin bone (tibia), then ap plication of rigid plaster of Par is splints or cast from toes to groin, with the leg straightened, of course. The patient Is kept off the feet for six weeks. Then the splints or casts are removed and the patient gradually re sumes walking and general ac tivity Just as tho there had been a fracture of the leg. I cannot inform any one what such treatment will cost. That Is a matter to discuss with the surgeon. Likewise it Is for the surgeon to decide which hospi tal the patient is to enter, for the operation. Finally, of course no one. can guarantee anything and no. reputable physician or surgeon or specialist ever guar antees anything. If you under go surgical treatment for bow leg you do so at your own peril precisely as you do for any other medical or surgical treat ment. Can you fancy living on a world so tiny that a few hours' wolk would take vou entirely around the globe, and where the day Is only five hours long? Would you be thrilled to see another similar little world only 10 miles from yours? If so, consider migrating to the lit tle planet Eros, which now is gain In a position to be seen through small telescope. Xros, accidentally discovered by photography in 16S8, has ' played an important role In as tronomical measurements. This little world moves on curious orbit that in one part extends beyond Mars but at another is less than 14,000,000 miles from the earth. Eros goes through light varia tions with a period of five hours and 16 minutes, being three times brighter when most lumi nous than when staging a "fade out". Some observations indi cate that Eros resembles a fig ure "8". This may be Inter preted to mean that it Is really two spheres revolving about each other with a distance of nine miles between them. Per haps we get light from both spheres part of the time, then 2Vs hours later one Is hidden behind the other. The sun's distance Is most 'easily obtained by the indirect method of measuring the dis tance to a nearby planet In 1931 when Eros came within 16,000,000 miles of the earth, the whole astronomical brother, hood was measuring the space between our earth and this oth er world. To Dr. H. Spencer Jones, astronomer royal of Eng land, was assigned the enormous task of reducing, analyzing and coordinating the observations. For 10 years he and his assist ants worked and calculated. In 1041 he announced that the sun's distance, Instead of being 92800,000 miles the figure long accepted was 93,003,000 miles. This has been accepted and appears in recent textbooks. Some of us made an interest ing observation of Eros on Feb ruary 28, 1938, with a 4-inch refracting telescope. Olive Barber's Observations The home in which I'm stay. ing has an electric range and many radiators. Yet I'm think ing wistfully of a certain wood stove I know; a little .stove one of whose lids is cracked; a little stove with a rusty oven. As I'm writing this, I m sit ting In a big easy chair. The bed I slept in last night was soft; the covers warm and light as down. The stairs down which I came to this delightful living room were wide and thickly carpeted.
