of exposure of the young child
is important to encourage the
growth of strong straight bones.
Finally plenty of exercise, ac

riding tricycle, pushmoblle, bi

aids the development of straight
legs.
For youths or young adults
the usual operation is subcutan

puncture or small Incision in the
skin), at the apex of the curve
of the shin bone (tibia), then ap

Eros .Again
By J. Hugh Pruett
Astronomer, General Extension
Division, Univ. of Oreg.
Can you fancy living on a
world so tiny that a few hours'
wolk would take vou entirely
around the globe, and where the
day Is only five hours long?
Would you be thrilled to see
another similar little world
only 10 miles from yours? If
so, consider migrating to the lit
tle planet Eros, which now is
gain In a position to be seen
through small telescope.
Xros, accidentally discovered
by photography in 16S8, has
' played an important role In as
tronomical measurements. This
little world moves on curious
orbit that in one part extends
beyond Mars but at another is
less than 14,000,000 miles from
the earth.
Eros goes through light varia
tions with a period of five hours
and 16 minutes, being three
times brighter when most lumi
nous than when staging a "fade
out". Some observations indi
cate that Eros resembles a fig
ure "8". This may be Inter
preted to mean that it Is really
two spheres revolving about
each other with a distance of
nine miles between them. Per
haps we get light from both
spheres part of the time, then
2Vs hours later one Is hidden
behind the other.
The sun's distance Is most
'easily obtained by the indirect
method of measuring the dis
tance to a nearby planet In
1931 when Eros came within
16,000,000 miles of the earth,
the whole astronomical brother,
hood was measuring the space
between our earth and this oth
er world. To Dr. H. Spencer
Jones, astronomer royal of Eng
land, was assigned the enormous
task of reducing, analyzing and
coordinating the observations.
For 10 years he and his assist
ants worked and calculated. In
1041 he announced that the
sun's distance, Instead of being
92800,000 miles the figure
long accepted was 93,003,000
miles. This has been accepted
and appears in recent textbooks.
Some of us made an interest
ing observation of Eros on Feb
ruary 28, 1938, with a 4-inch
refracting telescope. In the cen
ter of the field of view were
three little stars of equal

Observations
The home in which I'm stay.
ing has an electric range and
many radiators. Yet I'm think
ing wistfully of a certain wood
stove I know; a little .stove one
of whose lids is cracked; a little
stove with a rusty oven.
As I'm writing this, I m sit
ting In a big easy chair. The
bed I slept in last night was
soft; the covers warm and light
as down. The stairs down
which I came to this delightful
living room were wide and
thickly carpeted. In the dining
room 1 see a beautifully carved
buffet and the table has candles
on it and an ornate holiday cen
terpiece.. Yet I'm wishful for a little
wood stove with a rusty oven.
Were I where that rusty-ovened
stove Is, I'd stuff the fire box
with good thick fir bark, place
one of the wobbly kitchen
chairs before it, let down the
oven door and stick my feet In
the oven. For the temperature
here in Seattle is 22 and radi
ators, no matter where, are Just
a bunch of iron. They can. be
gilded and fancifully scrolled
and they're still Just cold iron,
uninfluenced by the hot water
which, theoretically, flows
through them.
You can draw up a chair and
plant your feet on their gilt and
their scrolls and develop chil
blains In no time at all. I might
blister my feet in the rusty lit
tie oven but between chilblains
and blisters, I'll take the latter
every time. For ho matter how
deluxely acquired, a chilblain
is still a chilblain.
If I must freeze to death, I'd
like to do it in a dramatic man
ner; say In the far North with
the aurora borealis bannering
my departing spirit into the
great beyond. And the lonely
howl of a -wolf is Just my idea
of a fitting prelude to harp
twanging.
But this romantic departure
Is denied me. Nothing so musi
cal as a wolf's howl will float
above my bier but instead the
tortured bleating from the radio
of a Jive band. And what soul, I
ask you, can depart with proper
decorum to the strains of boogie
wooglel
Frozen to death In an uphol
stered chair with my feet plant,
ed on a radiator! What a pro
saic death for a woman who had
hoped that, however common
place her life had been, her
death might be dramaticl
