According to Lane exces sive clothing contributed to ca tarrhal trouble and premature aging. "The youngest men for their years I know are those who wear the least clothing and al low the air to circulate round their bodies three hundred and sixty-five days every year." (Signed only with initials). If Lane suggested that the kin "breathes" of course he was in error. The skin absorbs nothing, so far as we know. But the suggestion that exces sive clothing contributes to pre mature aging seems reasonable enough. Maybe that's the way we should think of it, Instead of thinking that It is because they are younger (and by infer ence less wise)) that they wear less clothing today. And for that matter only this spring (1944) I encountered that quaint old spirit of 1898 when I sought to buy light-weight clothing in one of the largest clothing stores of the country. Exposing as much of the body surface to the air as may be possible Is, I believe, a good health habit. Call it air bath, sun bath or whatever you pre fer. It is healthful whether the air is warm, cold or indifferent, though like a shower or perhaps more stimulating if cold. To the best of my knowledge neither an air bath nor a shower nor a tub nor a sponge bath need be more than moderately cold to give all the benefits there are to be gained from such bathing. So far as health and hygiene are concerned such air baths as the reader describes are, in my opinion, fully as good as the battery's medical officer said they are. By Walter CronklU United Press Correspondent With British 2nd Army in Hoi land, Oct. 17 (U.R) We might as well face it; barring a politi cal collapse Inside Germany, we won't be out of the foxholes by Christmas. For a month since the bold airborne descent on Holland we have sat on this salient. We have broadened its flanks just enough to protect the lifeline corridor up the middle of it. With 68-flghting days left be fore Christmas, here is the situa tion: to the east the Germans still have a broad bridgehead on this side of the Maas (Meuse). Our west flank Is still exposed, and the Germans have thousands of troops between the Waal and Belgium. The Germans still hold the most important communica tions centers Breda, Tilburg, S Hertogenbosch. They still hold defense lines on the Waal and the Maas. Antwerp Untenable Their campaign to destroy the channel ports vital to our build up has been at least partially successful. By holding pockets on the Schelde they still deny us the use of Antwerp. The plain fact is we have con siderably extended our supply line. This applies to the Ameri can front as well as the British and Canadian fronts. This is as obvious to the Ger mans as it is to us, and we can expect a difficult fight on the west side of Holland for every communications center. This campaign to reinforce and shorten the supply and maintenance lines must be won before the battle for Germany can shift Into high gear.
