EIGHT MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. Oct. 11, 1944 1 Your Health and Its Care BY OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M. D. Reader! should address inquiries toi Or. William Brady 26S El Camlno. Beverly Hills. Calif. A NIP FOR GRAM AND GRAMP From time to time I have directed to parents, teachers, spiritual advisers, doctors, urv cles, aunts, biB brothers and sisters a plea in behalf of growing boys and girls namely, t n e cere mony of pledging them against using alcohol or tobacco, and the annual re newal of t h c Dr Bred? pledge, say on the child's birthday, up to the time when the child becomes in dependent and self-supporting. I thank my lucky stars that my mother, a member of the Wom en's Christian Temperance Un ion (I wish they'd drop the Christian part of that name and make It just Women's Temper ance Union for I know some of the finest mothers who arc not Christians) pledged her children In this wav. We were ordinary children and we had as lief beaten mother up with a base- ball bat as break that pledge. Members and officers of the W.C.T.U. have now and again expressed approval of my atti tude. Spiritual advisers rarely. Parents once or twice Doctors never. Now If 1 had my way every blankety-blanked cocktail Joint in the country would be closed, not only on V-day and for a day or two thereafter, but forever. And every alleged eating place where liquor Is available would pay such a stiff tax on liquor sales that there would' be no pro fit in that end of the business. Now don't assume I'm Just a crank. I am speaking as a health expert. In his famous "Practice of Medicine" textbood Dr. Osier, speaking of the treatment of pneumonia, said: t "Alcohol does not seem to raise the blood pressure In fever, and the studies of Olive Barber's Observations Yes, I know It's a little early to start emphasizing the need for bird feeding tables. But the best mince meat recipe I ever got was from a woman who pave it to me at a 4th of July picnic certainly not mince meat mak ing season. And how about all the post war plans people are making though on one has as yet reported having heard the death rattle In tho enemy's throat. So I'm going to outline some ways of helping the pincushlony balls of feathers when the lime comes they need help. For the time will come when nature will seem to have for gotten her feathered children; when snow and freezing weather will bring hunger and cold and death will slnlk among the ranks of those which, as Margaret Mc Kenny so lovingly describes ns having, all summer, "woven a web of flight and song" for us. So when that time comes, be prepared to get out your food chopper and grind somo apple peelings; throw In a little suet and hamburger If you have it. Also put out plenty of uncooked cereals and be sure to put these where a bit of shelter will pro tect the food from snow and rain. Especially if there be snow! 1s (ceding imperative. The smoth ering lovlinrss which we find so esthetically satisfying will huve covered all food resources and starvation with birds is only a Question of a few hours. They say they are get destroying millions of voracious Insects which, If left unchecked would have eaton our last flow er, our last vegetable. Not only have they worked for us but have lifted their voices to the very vaults ut heaven In an ecstacy of Joy at the world they found so fine. Let us not be en tirely without recognition of the gay gallantry with which they have met life tho high-burning little flame within them which puts a song In their throats even as they keep constant vlgilelice for the ever present cat with its pouncing death. Dut be careful when you put out this food supply. Shut your Brings and Cook In my wards would indicate that it is not of much value in progressive vasomotor collapse. This does not mean, however, that It may not have a value In the fever, and I should be sorry to give up its use in the severer forms of enteric" (typhoid fever) "and of pneu monia." In the same edition (sixth, '06) Osier said in the chapter on treatment of typhoid and enteric fever: "Alcohol Is unnecessary In a great majority of the cuses. Of late years I have used it much less freely; but when the heart Is feeble and the toxic symp toms are severe, eight to twelve ounces of whiskey may be given In the twenty-four hours." Before we put Osier back on the shelf after all, he is not an authority today it seems per tinent to recall that who he visit ed his elderly mother and found her rather peakish ho advised her to have some wine every day. But mother shook her head. "No, no, Willie," she said, "I'm afraid I might get the habit."
