A NIP FOR GRAM AND GRAMP
From time to time I have
directed to parents, teachers,
spiritual advisers, doctors, urv
cles, aunts, biB
brothers and
sisters a plea
in behalf of
growing boys
and girls
namely, t n e
cere mony of
pledging
them against
using alcohol
or tobacco, and
the annual re
newal of t h c
Dr Bred? pledge, say on
the child's birthday, up to the
time when the child becomes in
dependent and self-supporting. I
thank my lucky stars that my
mother, a member of the Wom
en's Christian Temperance Un
ion (I wish they'd drop the
Christian part of that name and
make It just Women's Temper
ance Union for I know some of
the finest mothers who arc not
Christians) pledged her children
In this wav. We were ordinary
children and we had as lief
beaten mother up with a base-
ball bat as break that pledge.
Members and officers of the
W.C.T.U. have now and again
expressed approval of my atti
tude. Spiritual advisers rarely.
Parents once or twice Doctors
never.
Now If 1 had my way every
blankety-blanked cocktail Joint
in the country would be closed,
not only on V-day and for a day
or two thereafter, but forever.
And every alleged eating place
where liquor Is available would
pay such a stiff tax on liquor
sales that there would' be no pro
fit in that end of the business.
Now don't assume I'm Just a
crank. I am speaking as a health
expert.
In his famous "Practice of
Medicine" textbood Dr. Osier,
speaking of the treatment of
pneumonia, said: t

to start emphasizing the need
for bird feeding tables. But the

the post war plans people are
making though on one has as yet
reported having heard the death
rattle In tho enemy's throat. So
I'm going to outline some ways
of helping the pincushlony balls
of feathers when the lime comes
they need help.
For the time will come when
nature will seem to have for
gotten her feathered children;
when snow and freezing weather
will bring hunger and cold and
death will slnlk among the ranks
of those which, as Margaret Mc
Kenny so lovingly describes ns
having, all summer, "woven a
web of flight and song" for us.
So when that time comes, be
prepared to get out your food
chopper and grind somo apple
peelings; throw In a little suet
and hamburger If you have it.
Also put out plenty of uncooked
cereals and be sure to put these
where a bit of shelter will pro
tect the food from snow and
rain. Especially if there be snow!

to give up its use in the

Osier said in the chapter on
treatment of typhoid and enteric

"Alcohol Is unnecessary In a
