Coach Lome Arnold has tentatively settled on four of the first five posts after sending the cagers through their first week of practice. Captain Don Fawcett, Darrell Monteith, Dale Niedermeyer and Alan Weir, all lettermen, have Just about sewed up starting berths, ha said, while the fifth position was still "wide open." Battling for this spot are Bill Bayliss, Gil Tumy, Jack Kresse, and Herb Edwards, among others. Arnold said the biggest prob lem seemed to be at the guard posts. He wants to shift Fawcett, a guard last season, to forward to work with Monteith, and Is searching for another guard to team with Wejr. Niedermeyer Is at center. The squad of 60 men was cut Friday to 34, with 16 on the varsity and 18 on the sophomore roster. ETTERS AWARDED FOOTBALL SQUAD Bill Bayliss, fullback, was elected honorary captain of the 1942 Medford high school foot ball team at a banquet at the Old Mill Wednesday night, at which time 23 major and 11 minor letters were awarded the grid ders. Captains were named for each game throughout the past season. Major letters were given to Darrell Monteith, Bob Davis, Fred Ruch, Lowell Fleseh, Bill Bayliss, Bill Plaskett, Clayton Anderson, Myron Corcoran, Ray Casebeer, Steve Dippel, Bob Young, Hal Adams, Marvin Doty, Jack Baker, Jim Miller, Ken Stocks, Pete Vogel, Pete Orr, Richmond Shelley, Dale Niedermeyer, Gil Tumy, Dean Sheldon and Bob Robinson. Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 5 (U.R) B o n d y Black, Mississippi State's spectacular tailback who raced 82 yards to score against San Francisco last year, nearly duplicated his feat here today when he ran 72 yards for a touchdown to defeat the valiant Dons 19-7. Black, All-Southeastern back for two years, ended his college football career by leading the attack against a stubborn San Francisco eleven on a soggy field before a disappointing crowd of 200. ' Mississippi State scored five minutes in the opening period after Black, Lamar Blount, and Charlie Yancey pushed the Don line back to the 46-yard stripe. Working to the Frisco five-yard line for a first down. Black gave the ball to Blount on a reverse who scored standing. Ted Schuff's placement was blocked. The two principal Canadian woods used for aircraft are Sit ka Spruce of British Columbia and Yellow Birch of eastern Canada. SALESMEN TO GET E BOOST Washington, Dec. (U.B Price Administrator Leon Hen derson today authorized addi tional gasoline rations for a large part of the nation's 700.000 traveling salesmen to allow them a maximum driving dis tance of 8,600 miles a year. Salesmen who qualify under the revised plan will have their 400-odd mile monthly occupa tional driving ration increased up to a maximum of 716 miles a month. Details of the plan's operation are not yet completed, but OPA said that, roughly, salesmen eligible for the increased allow ance must be engaged fulltlme in the sale of necessary produc tive equipment for farms, factor ies, mines, oil wells, lumber camps or similar establishments, or of essential food, shelter, fuel, clothing or medical supplies.
