S (U.F9 A brilliant second half rally today tietted Notre Dame 13 to 13 tie with the Great Lakei Naval Training Station team before a frigid crowd of 35,000 fanf at Soldier Field. ' Great Lakes staged a sustain' ed drive of 72 yards immediate ly after it received the opening kick-off to gain Its first touch down and then came back after nine minutes of play In the sec ond period to score again to cli max a drive of Just 29 yards. By the time the Sailors had posted their 13 points on the scoreboard Notre Dame had the ball In Its possession for Just six running plays that had aggregat ed a loss of one yard. But the Irish of the second half were far different from the team on the field In the first half. Two explosive runs by Cor wln Clatt, the great sophomore fullback, and Crelghton Miller In the first three minutes of the third period rocked the Sailors back on their heels and they never recovered from the shock sufficiently to look the same team that had been on the frozen field early In the contest. The opening kick-off was downed on Great Lakes own 28 yard line. With Bruce Smith, the former All-America .ace from Minnesota, and his Gopher team mate. Bob Sweiger, carrying the ball IS times out of the 16 plays the Sailors needed to inarch 82, Great Lakes posted a touchdown after nine minutes of play. OCLANSlSSACRE 40 TO 13 Los Angeles, Dee. 8 (U.P5 Sharpening up their passing at tack with the tossing of Bob Waterfleld, the University of California at Los Angeles Bruins easily disposed of a hapless Vnlversity of Idaho 40-13 before scattered crowd of 12,000 fans in Memorial coliseum. The game was the first half of a Pacific Coast conference double-header with the Univer sity of Southern California Tro- ians scheduled to meet Montana University in the nightcap. The game was on the rough side with both teams drawing penalties for unnecessary rough ness. Lynn Compton of the Bruins and Idaho's John Tomlch were spilled from the game for fighting. Waterfleld, playing three quar ters of the game, accounted for three touchdown passes, one each quarter. The scrappy but outclassed and outweighed Vandals cashed In on their tricky offense and the passing of Halfback Howard Mnnsen who got off two long heaves to End Jack Tewhey for scores. The first one in the Ini tial quarter was good for 81 yards and the other In the final period was for 40 yards to Tew hey who dashed over from the three. OKLAHOMA LOSES Norman, Ok la., Dec. 8 U.R) Powerful William and Mary held the upper hand over Okla homa for three periods today and checked off a desperate fourth period rally to emerge victorious 14 to 7 in an inter sectional football game. The game was the highlight of Okla homa university's 30th anniver sary celebration. Fl LOSES TO BEARS IN COAST UPSET Berkeley, Cel., Dee. 8 (UP) A fighting California eleven added another upset to the West Coast's wildest football season In history today, turning back the heavily-favored St. Mary's pre-flleht Alrdevlls 12 to 8 be fore 22,000 fans in Memorial stadium. Sparked by big Bob Relnhard.' the Golden Bears' 1941 All America tackle, California raged from behind in the second half to score two touchdowns and score its biggest victory of a me diocre season. The Alrdevlls. tabbed 2-1 pre- game favorites, kept In the game only through the long pass ing of Ensign Vie Bottarl, the ex-California All-America naif- back. Bottarl notched the first score of the game early In the second quarter, pitching perfect 34 yard pass to Lieut. Ed Manske, former Northwestern star, in the end-zone. But Ensign Frankie Albert's attempted con version was wide, and California came roaring back with the start of the second half to tie the score. Grover Klemmer. world 400- meter track champion, started the Bear scoring drive after Albert's attempted quick -kick sailed only 11 yards and Cali fornia took over on the 34. Klem mer ripped off 17 yards over tackle, then picked up three yards In two line plunges. On third down, Klemmer faded back and passed to Reln hard on the Navy 10. The big All-America, playing quarter back this game, loped over the goal line unhindered. Joltln' Jim Jurkovich came in to kick the conversion, but the ball fell short. BY TEXAS AGGIES San Antonio, Tex., Dee. S (U.PJ Outplayed and outmanag ed for a quarter and a half by a stout-hearted Washington State Cougar eleven, the Texas Aggies struck back with a mixture of passes and runs to defeat the Pacific Coast eleven, 21-0. Paced by the hard-smashing tactics of Kennedy and Stover, Coach Babe Holllngbcrry's visit ing team had the Aggies on the run for more than a quarter, driving within the Cadet 20 yard line on three occasions. But a hard-charging Aggie line frustrated every threat Midway in the second quarter, Washington State received a big break when Welch fumbled Stover's punt on the Cadet 11 and Remington recovered. Three plays gained absolutely nothing and on the fourth down Londos' attempted field goal was low and wide. The Aggies took over on their own 20. A pass, Welch to Rogers, pick ed up six and then Daniels fixed one to Simmons 20 yards down field and the latter raced 31 yards to Washington State 14. On fourth down Sturcken pitch ed to Henderson on the five, who fumbled, only to have Zapalae save the day by grab bing the ball in midair and plunging on over. This reversal of form was too much for the coast team, which folded like a clam. The Aggies dominated the second half, scor ing twice in the third period and threatening on numerous other occasions. VANDALS 38 TOO Los Angeles, Dee. 8 U.R) The University of Southern Cali fornia Trojans fattened their batting average today In the Pacific Coast conference wtth a 38-0 whitewash over the Univer sity of Montana before 22,000 fans. The game was a nightcap In the conference'i first double header in history. The University of California at Los Anges Bruins easily knocked over University of Idaho, 40-13, in the opener. Using substitutes almost ex clusively, the Trojans were led by two unheralded third string ers Vincent Porter and Earle Parsons. Porter was a little ball of fire in the second quarter, running for three touchdowns. Dick Manning started the scoring for the Trojans early in the first period after Bob Musick had powered the ball from the Montana 40 to the IS. On the next play, Manning knifed through (he line and then to wards the edge of the field and raced over without a Montana man getting a hand on him. Dick Jamison missed the conversion. "B" PRE FLIGHT WINS Davis, Cal.. Dec. 8 U.R An Intercepted pass in the final two minutes of play set up a winning touchdown today for the St. Marys navy preflight "B" foot ball team over the California Aggies. The score was 7 to 0.
