(AP) Several senators predicted today the troubled International 1 1 u a 1 1 o n would assure President Roosevelt a Blear track in congress If he requests substantial Increases In the national defense budget. Senator King (D., Utah), who op posed the billion-dollar naval ex pansion program at the last session, said In view of world conditions he now was inclined to support larger appropriations for both the navy and the army. Mr. Roosevelt said this week a budget lncresse would be necessary to provide $160,000,000 for new war ship construction next year. Senator Borah (R., Idaho) Indi cated he would continue hta opposl tlon to large naval expenditures, but aald he had little hope congress pould accept his view. Senator Town send (R.. Del.) has predicted that most Republlcana would support In creases In defense appropriations. Senator Truman (D., Mo.) de clared: TU not only vote for more funds for the navy, but I am going to work for an adequate .apptoprlatlon for anti-aircraft guns and planes." Congressional sentiment In favor of atrengthenlng national defense waa forecast also by Senator O'Ma . honey (D.. Wyo.) Senator Pepper (D., Pla.) recently back from Europe, said troubled con ditions abroad had Impressed on him a need for stronger defenses. , From another quarter came a pro posal that the United States "ear nestly consider" retaining the Phil ippines as a national defense meas ure, Instead of granting their Inde pendence in 1946. Lieut. Ernest M. EUer, naval acad emy Instructor, contended in the United States naval Institute pro ceedings the Islands might prove to be a, source of strength rather than a weakness In event of a Pacific war. As long as this nation holds the Philippines, he said. It could "check possible Japanese world aggression" and "thereby protect her own shores." .Henselman Taking Insurance Course At Aetna Offices George Henselman, local repre sentative of the Aetna Casualty ' and Surety company, la now at the com pany's home office at Hartford, Conn., where he Is attending a spec ial training course.
