Tracy, used .'18 years, an itemant railroad construction laborer, burn in Nebraska, was a member of an xpcdition scut from Industrial Workers of the World headquarter in Seattle to hold treet meetings on certain corners i i Everett where such meetings were forbidden by city ordinance. . The prosecution mid the defense each idl ed more than l.'itf witnesses, whose testimony went far beyond the events of November 5. The state altempt- d to show that the conduct of num bers of the Industrial Workers of the World during the preceding three months in Kverett and on former oc- asions in other cities, was such as to lead the Snohomish countv authori ties to fear violence from the orfrnni zalioh and to warrant tho uso of se vere repressive measures. The defense introduced testimony, much of it from citizens of Everett, o show that the industrial workers in Kverett had been law-abiding, that their speakers had repeatedly de- larcd their oposition to the use of violence, and that members of the organi.ation were constantly subject ed to brutal treatment by Snohomish county authorities, control over whom had passed to Kverett mill owners and eoninierciiil club members. It is understood, though not of ficially aiiounced, that the cases against '. other men who were on the Verona during the battle, ami of whom are charged with first legrcc murder, will be dropped. Tracy and the other 711 men have been in the King county and Snoho mish county jails since the day of the fight, having been arrested in Seattle when the Verona returned here with five dead men and scores of wounded aboard. Against these millions, we now have but 150,000 motor trucks, al through tho truck percentage gain of each year is so great that the future of this branch of automobile manii facture is one of the rosiest sureties among American Industries. Consider for a moment just the cost of reeding 25,000,000 horses at least $1 a day per Dobbin. Twenty- five million dollars sounds like Euro- pean war figures, doesn't it? . If these horses all worked steadily which of course they do not, each might haul a half ton 10 miles a day. or In the aggregate 12,250,000 tons over 2,500,000.000 miles. It is estimated that 8,300,000 trucks could cover the same distance and haul the same tonnage as tic? 25,- 00,000 horses. Therefore, If each two horses were placed by a one-ton mo tor truck it wouhl mean 12,500,000 trucks reeling off about 375,000,000 miles each day. -Whereas the horses require $25,000,000 a day to feed, their haulage equivalent In trucks, liberally estimated, would consume much less in oil, repairs and deprecia tion, while covering 125,000,000 miles.
