The idea came to Mr. Warner the
other day when he rend of the pro
posed patriotic campaign to Increase
the meat and poultry production of
Oregon by many thousands of pounds.
What cheaper or quicker way than
poultry raising to help increase the
meat supply. Then bo also reasoned
that many Medfurd people, who are
without Incubating facilities would no
doubt bo glad of tlio opportunity to,
take eggs to some central point and
have them hatched free of charge. !

Tracy, used .'18 years, an itemant
railroad construction laborer, burn
in Nebraska, was a member of an
xpcdition scut from Industrial
Workers of the World headquarter
in Seattle to hold treet meetings
on certain corners i i Everett where
such meetings were forbidden by city
ordinance. . Sheriff Donald Meltne
and a posse were on tile city dock
at Everett when the expedition on
e steamer Verona approached. lie
forbade the expedition to laud and
while the sheriff and men on tho boat
were parleying, firing betfim, result
ing in the death of five men on the
Verona arid two on the dock.

testimony went far beyond the events
of November 5. The state altempt-

World during the preceding three

asions in other cities, was such as
to lead the Snohomish countv authori
ties to fear violence from the orfrnni
zalioh and to warrant tho uso of se
vere repressive measures.

that a conspiracy, to which Tiacy
was a party, existed for the purpose

to brook no opposition to their pro

on November " they fired upon the
se, precipitating the battle in
which Jefferson Heard, another dep
uty, and five Industrial Workers of
the World were killed and more than

The defense introduced testimony,
much of it from citizens of Everett,
o show that the industrial workers
in Kverett had been law-abiding, that
their speakers had repeatedly de-
larcd their oposition to the use of
violence, and that members of the
organi.ation were constantly subject
ed to brutal treatment by Snohomish
county authorities, control over whom
had passed to Kverett mill owners
and eoninierciiil club members.
It is understood, though not of
ficially aiiounced, that the cases
against '. other men who were on
the Verona during the battle, ami
of whom are charged with first
legrcc murder, will be dropped.
Tracy and the other 711 men have
been in the King county and Snoho
mish county jails since the day of
the fight, having been arrested in
Seattle when the Verona returned
here with five dead men and scores
of wounded aboard.
Over 10,000 more automobiles have
been registered with the automobile
department of the office of the secre
tary of state during January and Feb
ruary of this year, than wcro regis
tered In the samo period In 19 1G
there being 2 9,085 In the two months
Just ended, and 19,046 in the same
months last year.
Total fees received -this year to
March 1. have been $114,171, as
compared with $80,088.50 for 1910,
i, 458. 50 for 1915, $38,292.50 for
1914, and $26,534 for 1913, in the
first two months of each year.
The number of dealers registered
In January and February this year
was 270, while a year ago In the two
months It was 173. Number of chauf
feur licenses has decreased this year
from 1858 to 1740 and tho number of
motorcycle licenses decreased from
15C7 last year to 1517 this year for
the two months' time.
Jackson county ranks fifth in the
number of ears, having 1317 regis
tered on .March 1.

25,000,000 horses living in the

have but 150,000 motor trucks, al

might haul a half ton 10 miles a day.

horses were placed by a one-ton mo

miles each day. -Whereas the horses
require $25,000,000 a day to feed,
their haulage equivalent In trucks,
liberally estimated, would consume
much less in oil, repairs and deprecia
tion, while covering 125,000,000
miles.
