Health district announces Veterans’ Day closures Morrow County Health District has announced that Pioneer Memorial Clinic in Heppner and Irrigon Medical Clinic will be closed on Thursday, November 11, for the Veterans’ Day holiday. Laboratory and radiology departments at Pioneer Memorial Hospital will also be closed Thursday for non- emergent outpatient services. Mr. Bill’s Trivia returns for HDC fundraiser The Heppner Daycare and Preschool is bringing Mr. Bill’s Trivia back for another great, fun fundraiser on Saturday, November 20, at 7 p.m. at the Elks Club. Team can consist o f six players and the table cost is $150 ($25 per player). This fundraiser will help Heppner Daycare and Preschool cover some costs that would be impossible to cover on their own. The HDC board relies heavily on state funding which was recently cut and, o f course, fundraisers. Annual carnival to be held at HES Community Bank conducting _________ Obituaries Change for Charity Drive Paul Richard Simms Jr. Beginning Novem funds for the N eighbor ber 1st, and co n tin u in g until December 20th, 2010, Community Bank is con ducting The C hange for Charity Drive in all o f their areas. The program is an effort to collect funds from the community, to be used in that same community. Community Bank matches .50 on every dollar (up to $5,000). Each branch man ager has selected a charity to raise funds for that will directly benefit the citizens in the area. In a d d itio n , this year, the two regions o f the bank are in competition to raise the most money for their charities. Community Bank will donate an extra $1,000 to the charities in the region where the most donations are collected. The W estern R egion in cludes branches in Herm- iston, Heppner, Pendleton, M ilton-Freew ater, Walla Walla, and Clarkston. The Eastern Region encompass es branches in La Grande, Baker City, Union, Elgin, Wallowa, Enterprise, and Joseph. The to tal funds collected will be calculated after December 20, when the winning region will be determined. Charities to benefit in the Western Region, by branch are as follows: Hep pner branch is collecting hood C enter; H erm iston branches are collecting for Good Samaritan Ministries; Pendleton branches for Pio neer Relief Nursery; Milton Freewater for the City Light and Power Assistance Pro gram; Walla Walla branch is collecting funds for the United Way of Walla Walla; and the Clarkston branch will provide holiday gifts for nursing home residents in their area that do not have local families. In the Eastern Re gion: La Grande branches are collecting for the Fri day Back Pack Program (food for kids in need for the weekend); Baker City is collecting for all of the food banks in the Baker City area; Union branch is collecting for their local food bank; Elgin branch, for Elgin Food Bank and Community Connections; W allowa branch collects for the Wallowa Food Bank; E n te rp ris e a n d J o se p h branches are collecting for the Joseph/Enterprise Food Bank at Community Con nections. HHS students celebrate Red Ribbon Week Men of St. Patricks’ & St. William’s to hold fall dinner meeting The men o f St. Pat ric k ’s and St. W illiam ’s Catholic Church will hold th eir annual fall d inner meeting on Tuesday, No vember 16. A memorial Mass for the deceased men o f the parishes’ will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catho lic Church in Heppner. Din ner will follow the Mass in the parish hall. After dinner, a meeting will be held to plan activities for the com ing year. There will also be a video presentation and entertainment provided. Anyone with ques tions or suggestions can contact Fr. Fair board meeting announced NOAA issues monthly climate summary for Heppner Last week at Heppner High School was Red Ribbon Week. This year’s theme for the week was, “Take a step towards being drug and alcohol free.” To represent the theme, the whole student body printed giant foot prints going around the perimeter of the school in bright red paint on October 26. Overall the week was a great success and was concluded on Thursday with all of the students wearing red. -Photo by Autumn Morgan Neighborhood Center only accepting food, financial donations until Jan. 1 The Neighborhood Center o f South Morrow County will not be accepting clothing or household items through January 1. They will, however, be accepting food donations and financial assistance to help those in need during the holiday season. The N eighborhood Center will be distributing Christm as food and gift boxes. MCHD offers free Medicare Part D help According to pre liminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, tem peratures in Heppner aver aged slightly warmer than normal during the month o f October. The average tem perature was 52.3 degrees which was 1.0 degree above normal. High temperatures a v e ra g e d 63.7 d e g re e s, which was 0.5 degrees be low norm al. The highest was 82 degrees on the 2nd. Low temperatures averaged 41.0 degrees, which was 2.5 degrees above normal. The lowest was 32 degrees, on the 17*. P re c ip ita tio n to taled 1.28 inches during October, which was 0.16 inches above normal. Mea surable precip itatio n -at least .01 inch- was received on 12 days with the heavi est, 0.32 inches reported on the 24*. T he o u tlo o k for Novem ber from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal tem peratures and above nor mal precipitation. Normal highs for Heppner fall from 53.5 degrees at the start of November to 47.3 degrees at the end o f Novem ber. Normal lows fall from 34.0 degrees to 30.9 degrees. The 30 year normal precipi tation is 1.77 inches. The Na tio nal Weather Service is an office of the National Oceanic and Atm ospheric A dm inistra tion, an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department.
