The Parade o f Lights will kick off the evening event at 5:30 p.m. with all other activities to be held at the Elks Lodge immediately following the parade. The Elks Lodge will serve dinner so plan on coming and eating as a family and enjoying the whole evening. Drawing for winners will begin at 7:30 pm ., so make sure you get , there in time to drop your rewards cards in the prize boxes prior to that time. Lady Cardinals bring home third place trophy Heppner Garden Club taking orders for Christmas wreaths The Heppner Gar den Club is now taking or ders for Christmas wreaths and swags. Each is hand made by club members. W reaths sell for $20 and will be ready for pickup D ecem ber 9-11. Money raised goes toward a $500 scholarship for a 2011 Heppner High School se nior and for plants, flowers, and two hanging baskets for the City of Heppner’s sum mer growing season 2011. O rd e rs can be placed by calling Ida Farra at 541-676-9446. Community Thanksgiving events planned The community is invited to participate in two events in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. On Sunday, N o vember 21, at 4:30 p.m., a Community Thanksgiving Celebration will be held at the Heppner Elementary School cafeteria. This will be an opportunity to join neighbors in giving thanks for the bountiful blessings o f this past year in song, scripture and prayer. Dona tions of gently used winter jackets will be accepted for distribution to needy families. On T h a n k s g iv ing Day, N ovem ber 25, there will be a Commu nity Thanksgiving Dinner with turkey and all the trimmings, hosted by the Ecumenical Youth Group sponsored by the shared ministry of Hope Lutheran Church and All Saints Epis copal Church. The dinner will be held at All Saints beginning at 1 p.m. Everyone is wel com e to a tte n d th e se events. Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes due by Nov. 21 Local residents who would like to participate in Operation Christmas Child by wrapping a shoebox with gifts for a very needy child have until Sunday noon to get their boxes dropped off. The shoeboxes can be taken to a drop box on the front porch at Keith and Deana Price’s home at 565 NW Gale Street, or delivered to Willow Creek Baptist Church Sunday morning, November 21. Rebecca Jepsen, who is coordinating the project for the church will be delivering the boxes to a collection center in Rich land, WA, on Sunday after noon. From there the boxes will be distributed by the Samaritan’s Purse organiza tion. They expect to deliver over eight million shoe- boxes this Christmas give to needy children in over 100 countries. Participants are asked to fill the shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, hard candy, and a letter of encourage ment. A full story and more pictures can be found on Page SIX. -Contributed Photo Emert’s Second Addition Subdivision completed The recent comple tion of the Em ert’s Sec ond Addition Subdivision brings an exciting growth option to the City of lone. After planning and work ing together two not for profit groups, ICABO and lone Education Foundation formed a corporation. Grow lone, Inc for the explicit purpose of developing 40 acres north of the Emert Addition. T h ro u g h m any hours of planning and re search over the first months. Grow lone, Inc determined it would be in the best inter est of the project to annex into the City of lone prior to development. With the support of the City of lone. Grow lone, Inc hired an en gineering firm to draw the plans; after city approval, the work started in record time. Hundreds of hours, and significant amounts of material and equipm ent were donated by local farm ers, businesses, and city residents. The Port of Mor row made the develop ment happen by building roads, laying water lines and fulfilling the bulk of the general development requirem ents through a delayed payment agreement with Grow lone, Inc. Since the subdivi sion was completed; two of the 19 lots have sold, leav ing 17 available. The avail able lots range in price from $8,500 to $22,500 depend ing on location and size from .84 to 5.95 acres. Each lot has been DEQ approved for a septic system, has a water meter w ith city water to the property line and un derground power lines for each lot. Signs are in place at both entrances to the new addition showing lot sizes, placement and streets, mak ing a self guided tour of Emert’s Second Addition an easy option. Wild Beauty” presentation to be held at Irrigon City Hall 44 1908 receipt shows Gazette subscription was $1 The Northwest Photography Archive will present “Wild Beauty” photographs of the Columbia River Gorge 1867-1957 on Tuesday, November 23, at 7 p.m. at the Irrigon City Hall meeting room. The program will be presented by co-author John Laursen. This free event is sponsored by Oregon Trail Library District, Libraries of Eastern Oregon and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Mr. Bill’s Trivia returns for HDC fundraiser The Heppner Daycare and Preschool is bringing Mr. Bill’s Trivia back for another great, fun fundraiser on Saturday, November 20, at 7 p.m. at the Elks Club. Team can consist of six players and the ta ble cost is $150 ($25 per player). This fundraiser will help Heppner Daycare and Preschool cover some costs that would be impossible to cover on their own. The HDC board relies heavily on state funding which was recently cut and, of course, fundraisers. Maynard to speak at Chamber lunch meting A local reader brought by this receipt for payment of a Gazette subscription in 1908. The receipt was to William Kumberlin and was signed by a Mr. Crawford who was publisher of the Gazette at that time. The newspaper had not yet merged with the Times so was still just The speaker for Chamber lunch meeting this Thursday, November 18, will be called the Heppner Weekly Gazette. A year long subscription to the Gazette was $1 and the Luke Maynard, from Greenwood Resources (Boardman Tree Farm). Maynard will be receipt was apparently for six months at it shows a 50 cent payment.
