Morrow County Health District -continued front page l worked for the district for the past nine years and has seen it through some tough times. “This has been a fantastic jo b and com munity,” he said. “We have accomplished a lot.” “On behalf o f the board and the community we have really appreciated this. We would love to see you stay, but we u n d er sta n d ,’ M ills said. O ther board m em bers c o m p li mented Vander Does on his job at the district. M ills said the board needs to get going on Vander D oes’ replacement and recommended devoting December’s board meeting to discussing how to find a replacement. Vander Does said he felt the district was “in a different place now” than when he took the job, and perhaps his replacement should be someone who gets out and interacts more with the com m unity and also works on more public rela tions in the North end o f the county. The district was un der intense financial pressure before Vander Does arrived, and had even contemplated closing the hospital under the previous administrator. Vander Does helped bring the district back onto solid financial footing. In other business it was announced that the hos pital was going to become a “ sm o k e -fre e c a m p u s ” beginning next year. Vander Does talked about obtaining nicotine succession kits to help employees quit using tobacco. He said the district had eight tobacco users cur rently working there. In other business the board heard a report from the yearly auditor who said everything was in order and the district was in good financial shape. He praised the district and especially financial officer Nicole Ma honey for her work on keep ing and providing financial information to the auditors Michael R. Bell and Com pany. Some o f the finan cial highlights o f the auditor were: -The district’s over all business is growing with gross patient revenue in creasin g four p ercent or $205,000. -N o n -p a tie n t re v enues, including property taxes, increase by nearly 10 percent. Overall operating expenses increased 8.3 per cent or $454,020. Salary and wages increased $460,494 or 17 percent, and benefits increased by 20 percent or $145,050. -C ap ital e x p e n d i tures were $550,254 this year, including $171,128 for construction in progress on the seven bed h o sp i tal expansion. The largest purchases were related to the acquisition o f a duplex for staff housing and a re placem ent am bulance for B oardm an.
