seen it through some tough
times.
“This has been

job at the district.
M ills said the
board needs to get going on
Vander D oes’ replacement
and recommended devoting
December’s board meeting
to discussing how to find a
replacement. Vander Does
said he felt the district was
“in a different place now”
than when he took the job,
and perhaps his replacement
should be someone who gets
out and interacts more with
the com m unity and also
works on more public rela
tions in the North end o f the
county.
The district was un
der intense financial pressure
before Vander Does arrived,
and had even contemplated
closing the hospital under
the previous administrator.
Vander Does helped bring
the district back onto solid
financial footing.
In other business it
was announced that the hos
pital was going to become
a “ sm o k e -fre e c a m p u s ”
beginning next year. Vander
Does talked about obtaining
nicotine succession kits to
help employees quit using
tobacco. He said the district
had eight tobacco users cur
rently working there.
In other business
the board heard a report
from the yearly auditor who
said everything was in order
and the district was in good
financial shape. He praised
the district and especially
financial officer Nicole Ma
honey for her work on keep

information to the auditors
Michael R. Bell and Com

Some o f the finan

were:
-The district’s over

gross patient revenue in
creasin g four p ercent or
$205,000.
-N o n -p a tie n t re v

taxes, increase by nearly 10
percent. Overall operating
expenses increased 8.3 per

wages increased $460,494
or 17 percent, and benefits
increased by 20 percent or
$145,050.
-C ap ital e x p e n d i

year, including $171,128
for construction in progress
on the seven bed h o sp i

purchases were related to
the acquisition o f a duplex
for staff housing and a re

minor equipment purchases
for several departments.
