Planning commissions approve Heppner subdivision plans lliliiliiililiillliimllilnill Bessie Wetzell New spaper Library University of Oregon Eugene, OR 97403 By David Sykes Both Morrow Coun ty and City o f H eppner’s Planning Commissions ap proved plans last Wednes day for a new subdivision to be located in Heppner above Rock Street. The tw o planning commissions met for a sec ond time to discuss the pro posed subdivision, and, as in the previous meeting, heard public comment. Kyle Robinson, who owns the property, testified in favor o f g ran tin g the subdivision saying the wa ter runoff issues and other concerns voiced at the first hearing would be addressed in construction o f the road and other developments in the area. Robinson presented a letter from Ferguson En gineering which said “ ... there has been some concern reg ard in g the e ffe cts o f drainage resulting from the construction o f a roadway for the service of a proposed mental health facility and the site development o f that facility. Barton retired from his job with UPS after 30 years of service. Community members stopped by City Hall throughout the afternoon to say their farewells to him. Barton’s replacement will be Robbie Espinosa. The Heppner High School Civics Club is raf fling off two halves o f a steer to raise money for their trip to attend the Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C. in January. Each h a l f w eighs approximately 300 pounds. H eppner High Sc h o o l c o m m e m o r a t e d C ancer A w areness Week November 3-6. An.assembly was held on Wednesday to recognize the event. Jordan Shepherd and Maggie Ar mato made a PowerPoint slide show, while Cherisse Lemmon and Sarah Ballard presented the information to the HHS student body. Help light up Heppner for the Christmas holidays It’s that time again to help get Heppner ready for Christmas and what bet ter way than to volunteer a few hours helping the Hep pner High School students put the lights up in the trees on Tuesday, November 25, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Heppner Cham ber o f Commerce is asking for community involvement to get this done. Due to weather conditions last year, most o f the strands of clear lights were ruined and no longer working. The Cham ber asks anyone who would like to buy a strand or two of lights for $3 a strand to help reimburse the Chamber for the cost o f the lights. Dona tions o f strands o f 100 clear lights will also be gratefully accepted. Check your calendar and let the Chamber office know if they can count on your help on Tuesday, November 25, to get Hep pner ready to light up for the holidays. The more, the merrier. Call the Chamber office today at 676-5536 to volunteer or buy a strand of lights. HHS Civics Club raising money for Presidential Inauguration trip The tickets are $ 10 each or three for $20. The portion o f the property to be initially de veloped lies within the city limits, so the city planning commission put conditions on the approval. Those con ditions were: 1. D edicate the internal street as a city street at a width o f 52 feet and build certain components (curbs, sidewalks and utility strips) in phases as agreed upon with the city. 2. Streets, water lines, sewer lines and storm water catch ment basins will be built to City o f Heppner standards. City staff was also instructed to meet later with Robinson to work out details of the road construction and maintenance responsibilities on the subdivision. A gravel road will initially be allowed in to service development in the area, with road upgrades to come later. Each day, students dressed in colors that rep resented different kinds of cancer. Monday, students wore pink for breast cancer aw areness; Tuesday was light blue for prostate can cer awareness; Wednesday was black for melanoma awareness; and Thursday was lavender for cancer survivors.
