Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - FIVE HHS girls’ varsity track team wins Dick Horyna Invitational Heppner F B L A to sendstudents to state By KayLee Helfrecht This year the Heppner High School girls’ varsity track team is off to a good start. The girl’s team won the Dick Horyna Invitational in Stanfield on March 21. In the 100 meters Brynna Rust took second place and Sherilyn Peck took fourth. In the 200 meters Rust took second place and Peck took third. In the 800 meters Catherine McElligott took first with a time o f 2:40.83. In the 1500 meters McElligott took second and Erin Price took third. In the 3000 Jodessa Chapa took fifth place. In the 100 high hurdles Price took first with a time o f 17.52 and Kristen VanCleave took third place. The girls 4x100 relay team consisting of KayLee Helfrecht, Sherilyn Peck, Kelsie Putman, and Brittany Boothe, took fourth place. The 4x400 relay team o f Erin Price, Brynna Rust, Kristen VanCleave, and Kelsie Putman took third place. VanCleave took third place in the shot put and Peck took second place in the long jump with a jump of 14’05.00. The girls also took second place at the Umatilla/Heppner Invitational. There are many people already ranked in state, but they still have a very long way to go. The girl’s team would like to win districts, but it is going to be a very tight race between Elgin, Enterprise, Union, and Heppner. Mekayla Kindle, Micha Hintz, Nicole Kempken, Shane Miles, “Spirit”, Dalton Neal, JC Putman and Joe Schmidt receive their award of Honor C ard during the assemble Thursday at HES. -C o n trib u te d P h o to April 1 6 - 18 marks the State Leadership Conference held in Portland at the Lloyd Center area and convention center. Students from around the state gather to compete in the business arena, with public speaking, business subject mat ter testing, entrepreneurial and management projects and more. Heppner FBLA is asking Heppner businesses and in dividuals to join forces with the club to fund the trip. Checks can be made out to Heppner High School FBLA and sent to the high school at P(> Box 67, Heppner. The club needs to raise $500 more to cover this conference as well as a trip earlier in the year to a National Leadership Conference and Regional Skills Conference. FFA means Future Farmers o f America, but you don’t have to be a farmer to be in FFA. This last year, the membership count o f FFA went from 13 to 33 increas ing by 20 participants. They are trying to have an 8th grade recruitment and also, a good-bye to the seniors that are in FFA this year. The program is grazing the chapter’s ewes. Residents are asked to not allow dogs to go into the pasture, the sheep would appreciate it. Boat 6 T railer Tires The backyard o f Joe and JoAnne Burleson with it’s bed of sunny daffodils and blooming fruit trees has been chosen by the Heppner Garden Club for it’s first ever Garden Highlight recognition. The Burleson's labored to plant over 20 trees on the rocky hillside behind their Hagar Street home in Hep pner. Their terraced beds have season round interest with red poppies, daisies, foxglove, roses and more. A larger number o f potential honorees will be eligible for the Garden Highlight award such as homes outside city limits or yards with an exceptional seasonal feature.
