Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - THREE Cardinals win first football game of season The lone Cardinals got their 2007 football sea son off to a good start with an exciting 26-20 win over Cove at the Eight Man Clas sic last Saturday in Dufur. Trailing 20-6 early in the third quarter, the Cards found the endzone three tim es w ithout an answ er from the Leopards to first tie the game at 20 and then go ahead 26-20 with 3:08 on the clock. Three minutes gave Cove plenty o f time to make the game interesting though. Just when it looked like the lone defense had the Leopards where they wanted them on 4,h and 16, C ove’s quarterback made the most o f a broken play with a long run downfield to put his team in the red zone with 46 seconds to go. The Cardinal defense held tough, highlighted by a huge sack by Clay Morter on 4th down to give possession back to the Cards with 12 seconds remaining to seal the win. O ffen siv ely , J u s tin Archer led the team in rushing yards, carrying the ball 34 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Clay Morter chipped in with 35 yards on 10 carries and scored one TD.
