Students at Heppner Elementary have been par ticipating in the Bal-A-Vis- X program. Bal-A-Vis-X is a series of balance, auditory, and vision exercises of var ied complexity. Most activi ties are deeply rooted in rhythm. The program utiliz es beanbags, racquetballs, balance boards and tracking devices. It demands coopera tion, prom otes self-ch al lenge, fosters peer teaching, and also naturally lengthens attention spans, said a school news release. Teachers have noticed that as the students’ balance, fine motor, and co ordination im prove, their academics and behavior also improve, according to the school news release. Five students partic ipated in the program this year. Teachers Melissa Coin er and Mary Ann Elgueza- bal say they hope that more students will be able to par ticipate next year. Student helpers from Heppner High School have been assisting students all year with various exercises. HES students. Coiner and Elguezabal held a party on May 24 for Aaron Allstott, Sarah Price, and Sean Mur ray w ho have helped throughout the year. Stu dents and teachers demon strated their Bal-A-Vis-X skills while enjoying cookies and milk. “The Bal-A-Vis-X program has the essential el ements to bring all of the senses together to help ev ery student improve in some manner.” The program will be looking for volunteers next year. Boardman City Council adopts ’07-’08 budget During their Tues day, June 5, meeting, the B oardm an C ity C ouncil adopted the 2007-2008 fis cal y ear budget of $5,810,450. Lexington A lone Chess Little, along with advisor and Heppner High School technology teacher, Dave Fowler, will attend the national Technol ogy Student A ssociation conference this month in Nashville, Tennessee. TSA is a student or ganization with chapters from nearly every state and hosts around 5000 students at the annual conference. Heppner is one o f seven schools in the region to have a TSA chapter.
