Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 13,2007 Wheat Foundation announces scholarship winners HHS Greenhouse holds plant sale Heppner FFA The Oregon Wheat Foundation has announced the 2007 scholarship recipi ents. $500 scholarships were awarded to four high school seniors, M ichelle R ucker, A rlin g to n H igh School. Regi Seitz, Heppner H igh S ch o o l, W hitney Lenhart, Helix High School and Stacy M arie B ird, Sherman High School. Stu dents were judged on their com m unity involvem ent, academic achievement and an essay on a wheat indus try topic. M ichelle R ucker, A rlin g to n High S chool graduate, is the daughter of Jim and Sarah Rucker. She was very active in volleyball, basketball, track and rodeo. She served as a 4-H junior and teen leader. She will at- tend Oregon State Univer sity and major in business with a minor in exercise and sports science. Regi Seitz graduated from Heppner High School. Her parents are Wayne and Lori Seitz. She served as a 4-H A m bassador, a teen leader for Students Today A re n ’t R eady for Sex (STARS), and lettered in three sports. She plans to study pre-law at Oregon State University. W hitney L enhart, daughter of Steve and Cindy Lenhart, graduated from Helix High School. She was active in 4-H, FFA, basket ball, volleyball and Euro club. She plans to be an en gineer and will begin her col lege edu catio n at Blue Mountain Community Col- Charles Kidd Scholarship awarded Robert Turner of Ir- rigon has received the $250 Charles Kidd Scholarship administered by the Board- man Tillicum Club. This aw ard is given based on community service involve ment. Turner is a 2007 Riv erside High School graduate and is a 2006 Renaissance Award winner. He participat ed in football, basketball and track and has received sev eral awards for sports dur ing his four years at River side High School. His com munity service involved vol unteering at the Irrigon Wa termelon Festival, Riverside Kids Basketball Camp, Fam ily Worship Center, Cycle Oregon, and carpentry and welding projects for the high school. He plans to attend a four year college to study engineering. The Boardman Tilli cum Club is Boardman’s old est service club and admin isters the C h arles K idd Scholarship given to gradu ating Riverside High School students with an emphasis on community service. Applica tions for 2008 high school graduates may be obtained at the counselor’s office at Riv erside High School. Lexington Baptist VBS cancelled T he L ex in g to n Baptist Church will not be able to sponsor a vacation Bible school June 19 through June 23 as p re v io u sly planned. T he youth group from the Umatilla Baptist Church, who had planned to lead the program, will not be available that week. Scholarship applications for 2008 high school graduates are avail able online at www.owgl.org Umatilla Landing Days preparations underway The Umatilla Volun teer Firefighter’s Association and the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce will be working together again this year to host the “best Landing Days Celebration yet” on Satur day, June 23. The entire celebra tion will be held at the Uma tilla Marina. Familiar features at this annual celebration in clude: Saturday, June 16 - Distinguished Citizens Ban quet (held at the Desert Riv er Inn); 5K Fun RunAValk at Spillway Park kicks off Sat urday’s events; Parade fol lows at 10:30 am.; and Clas sic car show (as long as they receive entrants). There will also be a kids’ fishing pond; bouncy houses; flea market; local entertainm ent throughout the day on the "main stage”; street dance with two live bands, Blue T atto o and Nuketown; a beer garden opens at noon; and a fire works show at dusk. B rian and Susie Thompson and family and Ken Bailey and family were honored for going “above and beyond” for the FFA Chapter, and are now mem bers of the FFA Honorary Chapter. The D istinguished Service Award was given to many businesses and individ uals that gave support to the FFA Chapter, said advisor Beth Dickenson. Kevin and Angie Hughes, Tim and Sh annon R ust, B o b b ette Lovgren, Daye Stone, Vicky Rayburn, Lorrie Fox and Mark Burrows were all help ful in helping organize activ ities, working at the activi ties, chaperoning FFA activ ities or donating money to the chapter. Pendleton Electric d o n ated o v er $ 4 ,0 0 0 in labor to help rew ire the greenhouse and barn, and M orrow C o u n try G rain Growers donated the pro pane tank for the greenhouse and installed the heater. Forever was a “huge help” when it came to needing money for field trips, said Dickenson. They offered numerous fundrais ing activities for FFA and horticulture classes to do. Discovery Degrees w ere aw ard ed to Lane Wright, Whitney Matthews, Frank Meyer and Heather Wiggers, allowing them to continue their success in FFA. Green Hand Degrees were awarded to members that have participated in FFA and have satisfactory plans fo r th e ir SA E p ro je c ts. They brought out a bomb suit and students were able to try it on and go for a walk (it w eighs approxi mately 90 pounds), and on a hot day it was far from com fortable. They also brought the robot used with bombs and were able to show stu dents how it worked. Farber, an Oregon State Trooper also talked about his experience being on the SWAT team and a fire investigator. A c ar w ash, sponsored by the Heppner FFA Chapter, will be held th is F riday, June 15, beginning at 9 a.m. behind Les Schwab on Main Street in Heppner.
