Math Contest adds up to excellent evening Students came from the N orth and South, o f Morrow County that is, to co m p ete in the annual M orrow C ounty School District Math Contest. The co m p etitio n for m athem aticians in grades four through eight was held at Heppner Elementary on Thursday, April 21. Six stu d en ts per grade level were competing, having earned the right to do so on the basis o f their R1T sco res R IT sco res are generated by the state testing done on the computers two to three times each year The math teams were announced several weeks ago and the big night o f the competition saw students with sharpened pencils and sharpened math skills ready to do their best for th e ir sch o o ls and themselves A fter an in ten se te stin g perio d , the participants enjoyed cookies and punch while the tests w ere c o rre c te d T hen students, family members, friends and staff members c o n g re g a te d in the gymnasium to hear the news everyone had been waiting for. Eighth grade: 1“- Maggie Armato, HJHS; tie for 2nd- Joe Pranger, HJHS and Quinn Chick, HJHS; and tie for 3rd- Spencer Palmer, HJHS and Sherilyn Peck HJHS Seventh inning rally carries Backcountry Mustang JVs over Rockets hike offered By Rick Paullus A 10-run outburst in the seventh inning rallied the Heppner Mustang JV baseball team from a 6-3 deficit to a 13- 6 win over the Pilot Rock Rockets on Thursday, April 21 in Pilot Rock. The Mustangs, 6 and 0, will have a rematch with the Rockets at home on Thursday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m The Rockets took an early 1-0 lead until the Mustangs finally got on the board with a run in the fourth when Robbie Smith walked and came all the way around to score on a double by Andre Rauch. The Mustangs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Kody Lovgren singled. Sean Murray walked, Nathan Kennedy had an RBI single and Murray scored as Kennedy was throw n out stealing The Rockets came right back with five runs in the bottom half to take a 6-3 lead an it stayed that way until the seventh. Cody Hollis singled, Colton Hanson walked. Nacho Elguezabal scored both with a double. Smith was intentionally walked and Ricky Martin beat out a slow roller for an infield hit to lead the bases. Ben McCarl tied at six with an RBI single, then the Rockets had trouble throwing strikes as Lovgren. Murray, Hollis and Hanson each walked to force in runs before Elguezabal scored two with a double and I Smith had an RBI single to make it 13-6. Kennedy went five innings in relief, striking out eight, walking two. two hits and no earned runs to pick up the win. Elguezabal went two for five with five RBI. Kennedy went three for five, McCarl went two for four and Hollis, Hanson. Smith. Lovgren and Murray each scored twice. Eight of the 10 Mustangs had at least one hit in the game. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, it carried over to the next game as they lost 5-3 to drop to 3-2 in the CBC and 10-4 overall. The M ustangs will be at home against Weston- McEwen for a doubleheader on S aturday, A pril 30, beginning at 11 a m and will be at Umatilla on Tuesday, May 3 for a single game at 4:30 p.m. The M u stan g s jumped out early in the first inning o f the first game as Jode Coil walked and went to second on a wild pitch and K ory P au llu s w as intentionally walked. After both had moved up on a wild pitch, they scored as Quinn Peck reached on an error. The team added two more in the fifth when Sloan K eith ley d o u b le d , Kyle Carlson singled, Keithley ended up scoring on a wild pitch and Carlson scored when Josh Gutierrez reached on an error. The Mustangs added one m ore in the seventh when Carlson walked, Coil singled and Gutierrez had an RBI single They couldn’t hold on though as the T igers rallied for the win. G u tie rre z w ent seven innings, striking out five and also had two RBI at the plate. Carlson was one for two and scored twice, Coil went one for two and K eith ley , P aullus, N ick Christman and Matt McCabe each went one for three. In the second game, the Tigers scored twice in the second, once in the fifth and twice more in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead into the seventh before the Mustangs finally woke up N acho Elguezabal w alked and Cody H ollis came in to pinch run for him. M cC abe singled and Keithley walked to load the bases. Coil reached on an e rro r to score tw o and Keithley scored as Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice, but the rally ended there. C oil w ent six innings, striking out seven and giving up three hits, two walks and three earned runs. Keithley went two for two, Peck went one for two and McCabe went one for three.
