drop two to
Tigers

Math Contest adds up to excellent evening
Students came from

District Math Contest. The

four through eight was held
at Heppner Elementary on
Thursday, April 21.
Six stu d en ts per
grade level were competing,
having earned the right to do
so on the basis o f their R1T
sco res R IT sco res are
generated by the state testing
done on the computers two
to three times each year The
math teams were announced
several weeks ago and the
big night o f the competition
saw students with sharpened
pencils and sharpened math
skills ready to do their best

themselves

Seventh inning rally carries Backcountry
Mustang JVs over Rockets hike offered

A 10-run outburst in
the seventh inning rallied the
Heppner Mustang JV baseball
team from a 6-3 deficit to a 13-
6 win over the Pilot Rock
Rockets on Thursday, April 21
in Pilot Rock. The Mustangs,
6 and 0, will have a rematch
with the Rockets at home on
Thursday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m
The Rockets took an
early 1-0 lead until the
Mustangs finally got on the
board with a run in the fourth
when Robbie Smith walked and
came all the way around to
score on a double by Andre
Rauch.
The Mustangs took a
3-1 lead in the fifth when Kody
Lovgren singled. Sean Murray
walked, Nathan Kennedy had
an RBI single and Murray
scored as Kennedy was throw n
out stealing
The Rockets came
right back with five runs in the
bottom half to take a 6-3 lead
an it stayed that way until the
seventh.
Cody Hollis singled,
Colton Hanson walked. Nacho
Elguezabal scored both with a
double. Smith was intentionally
walked and Ricky Martin beat
out a slow roller for an infield
hit to lead the bases. Ben
McCarl tied at six with an RBI
single, then the Rockets had
trouble throwing strikes as
Lovgren. Murray, Hollis and
Hanson each walked to force
in runs before Elguezabal
scored two with a double and

Smith had an RBI single to
make it 13-6.
Kennedy went five
innings in relief, striking out
eight, walking two. two hits and
no earned runs to pick up the
win.
Elguezabal went two
for five with five RBI. Kennedy
went three for five, McCarl
went two for four and Hollis,
Hanson. Smith. Lovgren and
Murray each scored twice.
Eight of the 10 Mustangs had
at least one hit in the game.

they w ere leading the
Stanfield Tigers 5-0 in the
bottom o f the seventh inning,
but then the Tigers rallied to
tie it and eventually won 6-5
in the bottom o f eighth in the
first game o f a Columbia

the Mustangs, it carried over
to the next game as they lost
5-3 to drop to 3-2 in the
CBC and 10-4 overall.

beginning at 11 a m and will
be at Umatilla on Tuesday,
May 3 for a single game at
4:30 p.m.

rallied for the win.
