The donation was made in part from the dinner at the high school as well as matching funds from the Lutheran Thrivent Financial organization. Obituaries Michael G Hedman Michael G Hedman, 53, o f Union, died Monday, Jan 10, 2005, at Legacy Em anuel H o sp ital in Portland as the result o f injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accid en t at La Grande A memorial service was held Jan. 15 at the Heppner United Methodist Church Hedman was born Dec 28, 1951, at Marquette, MI, to A rnie and Rita B elm ore H edm an The fam ily la te r m oved to Athena, then to lone, before settling at Heppner in 1963. He graduated from Heppner High School in 1970. He attended Eastern Oregon College at La Grande and Oregon State University at C o rv allis, w here he graduated in 1975. In 1976, he married C heri W h ittak er at Pendleton The couple were parents o f two daughters. They later divorced. Hedman lived in the Pilot Rock area where he raised cattle for 17 years before moving to Union, where he worked as a fence contractor and in the off season worked for Bechtold Construction He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the United Methodist Church He w as an avid outdoorsm an who loved fishing and hunting and the mountain Survivors include daughters, Mellisa Hedman o f Portland and Joni Hedman o f Lake Oswego; his mother and stepfather, Rita Hedman DeZeote and Leo DeZeote o f Heppner; brothers, Steve Hedman o f Santa Rosa, CA, Jon Hedman o f Danville, VA, Dale H edm an o f M attaw a, WA, and Tim Hedman o f Heppner; and sister, Dee M iller o f Hillsboro He was preceded in death by his father, Arnie Hedman, in 1999. Barbara Jean Simpson Larsen B arbara Jean Sim pson L arsen, 71, o f Eugene, died Monday, Jan 10, 2005 at South Hills R ehabilitation C enter in Eugene A memorial service will be held at Rest-Haven Funeral Home in Eugene on Feb 4, 2005. L arsen was born Feb 7, 1933, in Hood River, to Francis Clyde and Jessie (M cLeoud) Simpson. She grew up in Hood River and The Dalles, graduating from The Dalles High School in 1951. In 1955, she married Ervin D Larsen in Springfield He died in 2002. She retired in 1971 from the retail fashion business. The Larsens love of trav el kept them busy throughout the years, taking several trip s a year and extended trips to Ireland, England and New Zealand, besides the O regon and California coasts. Judge Michael Adler denied a motion, filed by Deschutes County Deputy District A ttorney Victoria Roe, to consolidate the trials o f form er reserve deputy Mark J. Rietmann, 29, and fo rm er d ep u ty M ichael Patrick Malloy, 38. Rietmann was last employed by the M orrow County Sheriff’s Office. Malloy’s month long trial on 143 counts filed against him is scheduled for April 5. Rietmann is to stand trial on 11 counts on June 21 In a brief in support o f the motion, Roe asserted that the charges against both men are “o f the same or similar character; are based on the same act; are based on tw o or m ore acts or tra n sa c tio n s co nnected together or constituting parts o f a com m on schem e or plan.” The brief also stated that the same witnesses are required for each case and that the alleged criminal acts involved the same victims Rietmann’s attorney, Jonathan G Ash, filed a response in opposition to the motion, arguing that because his client was only alleged to be involved in one incident invo lv in g the g irls, Rietmann’s right to a fair trial w ould be “ su b stan tially prejudiced” if he were tied at the same time as Malloy A dler denied the m otion filed by Roe and scheduled separate trial dates for Malloy and Rietmann B oth men are released pending trial
