T h e M ustangs (2-0 in the CB C and 4-0 o v e ra ll) held the R ockets to 58 total yards w hile racking up 478 yards, 335 on the ground. The Mustangs started out in great field position after fo rc in g a p u n t th a t w as downed at the Pilot Rock 34- yard line. They went right to w ork as Tyler B oyer ran for four yards then took a pass from C huy E lguezabal 15 yards. Kyler Lovgren ran for three then A aron D elveaux to o k a sw in g p a s s fro m Elguezabal 12 yards for a touchdow n. Lovgren kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 early in the first quarter. A nother deep kick o ff pinned the Rockets back at their 10-yard line and the M u sta n g s fo rced a n o th e r punt, w hich w as dow ned at the Pilot Rock thirty-one. After a motion penalty Boyer carried three times for 19 yards before Lovgren broke free for a 17- y a rd to u c h d o w n ru n . L ovgren’s kick w as good to m ake it 14-0 with 5:35 left in the first quarter. A fter a failed outside kick gave the Rockets good field p osition, the defense forced another punt that was downed at the M ustangs’ 12- yard line. The offense took over from there as B oyer ran for five and after a m otion penalty ran for eleven m ore and a first dow n, as the first q u a r te r e n d e d . L o v g re n picked up seven, Boyer two, E lguezabal picked up three before Lovgren broke free for 22 yards. Boyer ran twice for 19 yards, L ovgren ran for eleven, M att K enny ran for six, and an offside penalty took the ball to the four w here Lovgren took it in for the to u ch d o w n . H eppner JVs beat W ahtonka By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustang JV football team im proved to 2 and 1 on the year with a 22-0 win over the Wahtonka Eagles on Monday, Sept. 22 in The Dalles. The Mustangs started the year w ith a 42-24 loss to th e R iv e rs id e P ira te s on T h u r s d a y , S e p t. 11 in B oardm an. T he M ustangs held an 18-14 halftime lead on tw o to u c h d o w n ru n s by M atthew VanCleave and one by K ory P a u llu s, b u t the Pirates rallied with 28 second- half points. The only Mustang score com e on a hitch-and- pitch from K ody Lovgren to P a u llu s f o r a 7 0 - y a r d touchdow n late in the fourth quarter. The M ustangs next p la y e d th e G ra n t U n io n P r o s p e c to r s a t h o m e on Thursday, Sept. 18 and took an exciting 14-12 w in in the final seconds. The M ustangs scored first as Paullus took an interception from his own five to inside the Prospectors five and C asey M aben took it in for the touchdow n. The two- point conversion was good to m a k e it 8 -0 , b u t th e P ro sp ec to rs cam e b ack to score two touchdowns to take a 12-8 lead late in the fourth quarter. The M ustangs drove dow n the field and scored on a 25-yard pass from Q uinn P e c k to M a b e n w ith 12 seconds left to give them the win. By Rick Paullus The H eppner Ponies used a stingy defense and turnovers to blank the visiting Pilot R ock R ockets 21-0 on Friday, Sept. 26. The Ponies, now 3 and 0 on the year, will be at Irrig o n to p la y th e Columbia Raiders “A” team on Friday, O ct. 3, at 3 p.m. The Ponies took the opening kick- o ff and went to w ork as M att M cC abe ran twice for 13 yards then broke outside on a sw eep for 30 yards. M cCabe picked up six m ore yards to the eight-yard line. Spencer Palmer took it to the one, but the Mustangs lost four yards on the next play, but P a lm e r to o k it in fo r the to u c h d o w n . E ric S k a g g s kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. M att Holland picked o ff a R ocket pass after the k ic k o ff and returned it 15 yards to the Pilot R ock 27- yard line. On fourth and long M cC abe picked up 12 yards to the thirteen, but the Rockets defense stiffened and took over on downs. The Ponies forced a punt, which Palmer took in at his 40-yard line, broke a tackle and picking up som e good blocks took it 60 yards for a touchdown. Skaggs’ kick was good to m ake it 14-0. T h e P o n ie s a g a in forced a punt and w ent to w o rk again w ith M cC abe p ick in g up seven, P alm er fifteen and Lane B ailey hit M cCabe for a 15-yard gain. The Rockets ended the drive with an interception in the end zone that w as brought out to the five-yard line. The defense took over though as Jake Van D oom rushed in and batted the ball into the air and Taylor Hodges gathered it at the one and took it in th e e n d z o n e fo r a touchdown. Skaggs’ kick was again good and the Ponies led 21-0 at the half. The Rockets took the second h a lf k ick -o ff and put together their best drive getting inside the Ponies twenty-five before the defense stiffened. Bailey and Jason Wainwright had q u a rte rb a c k sacks on su c c e s s iv e p la y s a n d the Ponies took over on downs at their 25-yard line. Palmer ran three times for 41 yards, but the drive stalled and the Rockets took over on downs. T h e te a m s tra d e d turnovers, then the Ponies fum bled, but H olland cam e right back with an interception to give them back the ball. Palmer ran twice for 21 yards, but two fumbled shotgun snaps in a row lost 25 yards. Palmer ran for 10 yards, but on the play the Rockets quarterback was injured and the game was called with 2:00 left, giving the Ponies the 21-0 win. Cody Walton picked up seven before Lovgren broke through th e m id d le for a 3 9 -y a rd touchdow n run. His kick was good to make it 34-0 less than a minute into the third quarter. Delveaux picked o ff a R ocket pass on th eir next possession and returned it to the M ustang 28-yard line. Walton ran twice for 24 yards and Lovgren rushed twice for 10 yards, but a fum ble gave the ball back to the Rockets at their 35-yard line. T h e d e f e n s e h e ld again forcing a punt, but a penalty and a bad snap out o f the shotgun gave the ball back to the Rockets. The defense cam e up solid again as they took over on dow ns at their ow n 38-yard line. Boyer ran for seven, Elguezabal ran for fiv e , a n d th e n h it J u s tin Botefuhr for 21 yards. Boyer gained 21 yards on a pass from Elguezabal and after an offside p e n a lty on th e R o c k e ts , Walton took it in the end zone from four yards out. W alton tac k led the kick returner at the 10-yard line on the kick-off and Kenny picked o ff a pass at the 11- yard line, but the M ustangs were unable to move the ball, giving it back to the Rockets at the 24-yard line. Mikel Britt recovered a fumble on the next play, but the Mustangs fumbled the ball right back to the Rockets. Justin Delveaux ran for 10, Peck picked up seven, Brendan McElligott ran twice for 10 yards and M atthew V an C le a v e ran fo r se v e n yards. V anC leave th en hit Kory Paullus who broke free dow n the sideline for a 58- y ard to u ch d o w n . T he run failed, but the M ustangs led 48-0 with 2:20 left. Boyer led the defense with 19 defensive points, with Lovgren adding 15 point and S k a g g s 14 p o in ts . B ria n H aguew ood had 13 points, K e n n y 12 p o in ts , R o ry K ilk e n n y 10 p o in ts a n d Elguezabal and Peter G eer each had nine points. Lovgren finished with 121 y a rd s on 11 c a rrie s . Boyer had 97 yards on 14 carries and Walton picked up 49 yards on six carries. Elguezabal completed six o f nine passes for 87 yards, w ith B o y e r h a v in g tw o receptions for 36 yards and Lovgren catching two passes for 16 yards.
