Mustangs roll past Rockets at Homecoming

R ockets to 58 total yards
w hile racking up 478 yards,
335 on the ground.
The Mustangs started
out in great field position after
fo rc in g a p u n t th a t w as
downed at the Pilot Rock 34-
yard line. They went right to
w ork as Tyler B oyer ran for
four yards then took a pass

M ustang JV football team
im proved to 2 and 1 on the
year with a 22-0 win over the
Wahtonka Eagles on Monday,
Sept. 22 in The Dalles.
The Mustangs started
the year w ith a 42-24 loss to
th e R iv e rs id e P ira te s on
T h u r s d a y , S e p t. 11 in
B oardm an. T he M ustangs
held an 18-14 halftime lead on
tw o to u c h d o w n ru n s by
M atthew VanCleave and one
by K ory P a u llu s, b u t the
Pirates rallied with 28 second-
half points. The only Mustang
score com e on a hitch-and-
pitch from K ody Lovgren to
P a u llu s f o r a 7 0 - y a r d
touchdow n late in the fourth
quarter.
The M ustangs next

P r o s p e c to r s a t h o m e on
Thursday, Sept. 18 and took
an exciting 14-12 w in in the
final seconds. The M ustangs
scored first as Paullus took an
interception from his own five
to inside the Prospectors five
and C asey M aben took it in
for the touchdow n. The two-
point conversion was good to
m a k e it 8 -0 , b u t th e
P ro sp ec to rs cam e b ack to
score two touchdowns to take
a 12-8 lead late in the fourth
quarter. The M ustangs drove
dow n the field and scored on
a 25-yard pass from Q uinn
P e c k to M a b e n w ith 12
seconds left to give them the
win.

The H eppner Ponies
used a stingy defense and
turnovers to blank the visiting
Pilot R ock R ockets 21-0 on
Friday, Sept. 26. The Ponies,
now 3 and 0 on the year, will
be at Irrig o n to p la y th e
Columbia Raiders “A” team on
Friday, O ct. 3, at 3 p.m.
The Ponies took the
opening kick- o ff and went to
w ork as M att M cC abe ran
twice for 13 yards then broke
outside on a sw eep for 30
yards. M cCabe picked up six
m ore yards to the eight-yard
line. Spencer Palmer took it to
the one, but the Mustangs lost
four yards on the next play, but
P a lm e r to o k it in fo r the
to u c h d o w n . E ric S k a g g s
kicked the extra point to make
it 7-0.
M att Holland picked
o ff a R ocket pass after the
k ic k o ff and returned it 15
yards to the Pilot R ock 27-
yard line. On fourth and long
M cC abe picked up 12 yards
to the thirteen, but the Rockets
defense stiffened and took
over on downs.
The Ponies forced a
punt, which Palmer took in at
his 40-yard line, broke a tackle
and picking up som e good
blocks took it 60 yards for a
touchdown. Skaggs’ kick was
good to m ake it 14-0.

The Rockets ended the drive

The defense took over

rushed in and batted the ball
into the air and Taylor Hodges
gathered it at the one and took
it in th e e n d z o n e fo r a
touchdown. Skaggs’ kick was
again good and the Ponies led
21-0 at the half.
The Rockets took the
second h a lf k ick -o ff and put
together their best drive getting
inside the Ponies twenty-five
before the defense stiffened.
Bailey and Jason Wainwright
had q u a rte rb a c k sacks on
su c c e s s iv e p la y s a n d the
Ponies took over on downs at
their 25-yard line.
Palmer ran three times
for 41 yards, but the drive
stalled and the Rockets took
over on downs.

turnovers, then the Ponies
fum bled, but H olland cam e
right back with an interception
to give them back the ball.
Palmer ran twice for 21 yards,
but two fumbled shotgun snaps
in a row lost 25 yards. Palmer
ran for 10 yards, but on the
play the Rockets quarterback
was injured and the game was
called with 2:00 left, giving the
Ponies the 21-0 win.

the ball back to the Rockets
