Mustang bats sink the Vikings

In the opener the Mustangs played
good hall only hat ing one error The
Mustangs scored early in the first in
nmg as senior Craig Angell hit a
double to bring in Brandon Pedro,
l^ter Angell scored on a sacrifice fly
ball to right field to give Heppner a
2-0 lead in the first In the fourth in­
ning Angell again scored as he caus­
ed the Viking defense to make an er­
ror In the top of the fifth the
Mustang bats took charge, pounding
out five hits to score six runs ending
score 9-2. Throwing for Heppner
was Angell who struck out 13. walk­
ed four and hit three Angell only
allwed two hits to stop the Vikings
He also led the team at the plate in
the first game as he went 2-4
In the nightcap the Heppner bat­
ters got serious as lead off hatter Bob
Krein Maned the game right with a
double Followed by Slater Mitchell
who brought Krein in on another
double Doug Devin brought Mit­
chell in and himself as he put Vik­
ing pitcher Mike Nelson's faM ball
over the left field fence to give Doug
his first home run of the season
Minutes later pitcher Russell Britt
pounded a double to dnve in Dick
Devin and end the first inning xcor
mg at 4-0. but Heppner was just
warming up for the second inning
The MuMangs took control again
with a two-out rally This time Slater
Mitchell Maned the rally as he put
the first pitch over the wall for a
three-run homer Following was
Doug Devin who also thought the
fence was too close, as he pul
another one over the wall Again
Britt scored Devin on a double, and
Britt scored on a hit by F.nc Connor
Connor scored on a hit by Krein and
ended the inning with a score of
11-0 The MuMangs laid back the
laM three innings to ride their lead
and end the game with 15-0
Mitchell kept going with the bat as
in the top of the fifth he put another
faM ball out of play to give him his
second home run of the game
Britt was on the mound for the
MuMangs Britt threw a m>hitter.
Mnking out sesen and walking four
leading the MuMangs with bats were
Doug Devin and Maid Mitchell
They each went 3-4 including two
home runs, and a double apiece
Britt went 3-3 and all three were
doubles Bob Krein went 2-4 in
eluding a double As a team, the
MuMangs pounded out four home
runs, sesen doubles and a total of 15
base hits This two game win puts
Heppner in a tie for first place with
the Riverside Pirates

The Heppner Ponies started their
year with a game at Stanfield April
h The Ponies went ahead in the firM
inning and then never fell behind
Stanfield scored three runs in ¡he
founh inning to bring the score to
12 5 That's all the closer it got
Heppner went ahead to win the
game. 14-5
The Ponies second game fell on
the 13th of April. againM Columbia
Columbia took control in the firM in
nmg going ahead 7-0 That was the
beginning of the end for Heppner
It never got closer than 12-3 The
final score was Columbia 15. Hcpp

The third game once again was
againM Stanfield played in Heppner
It looked good for the Ponies at the
start when they went up 1-0 in the
second Then Stanfield fought back
going ahead 4-3. and scoring again
in the next inning 5-3. Then the
Pomes hit a bad streak and Stanfield
went ahead 10 4 as they headed into
the bottom of the sixth Heppner
started a rally that went until the
Ponies pulled ahead 11-10 and win
ning the game
The next Pony game will be held
Thursday, April 27 in Heppner
against Arlington Game time is at
2 p m

breaker. Rudisill won the match.

number 2 singles Linda Morler
defeating Cammie Kelt/, 8-3.
The only win for the lone hoys
was the number 2 doubles team of
Brent Shcirhon and Hric Orem
defeating Brad Butch and Howard

The first practice for Heppner
Minor league and T ball players will
be held Monday. May I at the
fairgrounds Practice will be from
6-7 p m
All kids who have already signed
up should plan to attend along with
the children who have not signed up
Inii Mill wish to play This is your
time to sign up.
Children must he at least 7 years
old but not over 12 by August I to
be eligible to play. The cost is S I5
for the first child in each family and
SID for each additional child Be
sure to bring your baseball glove
