Date set for 2nd Currin Invitational April 30 is the date set for the sc cond annual Currin Invitational Calf Roping ami Steer Wrestling to be held at the M orrow C ounty Fairgrounds A WPRA barrel race, along with a M oitow Umatilla coun ty businessman s cow milking will also be held (H er 75 lop cowboys and cowgirls will compete for over $8 .(XX) in prize money Buckles made by Kenny Hansen of The Dalles will be given to the average winners of the calf roping and steer w restling The calf roping buckle was donated by the Elks ami the steer wrestling buckle was donated by Millers Mini Mart. Cur rin R anches and Sid Britt Construction A special award will be given to the owner o f the horse voted as the "Best Working Calf Horse" I'he horse blanket donated by the Bank of Eastern Oregon will have a leather plaque depicting the award, made and donated by I ee Ansotegui of Green Feed The businessmans cow milking is open to Morrow and Umatilla coun ty businesses and will consist of three people The entry fee is $25 per team, with all of the money to go to the pot, to be split 60*4 -40*4 to the top two teams Also scheduled is a cowboy auc lion to be held at the Elks starting at 8 p m Saturday. W Dale Conklin (I) shows Bryan Padberg (r) his name in The Oregon Track Book Bryan was named Track Athlete of the Year for 1988 Bryan Padberg, Hcppncr High School senior, has recently been named by Who's Who in ()rcgon Track as Class A M an's track Athlete of the Year for 1988 Padberg was selected for honor as a double state track meet champion m the 15<X) and 3,000 meter and leading the Hcppner boys to the 1988 Class A State Championship He is ranked as having run the tilth best all time 3.(XX) meter time of 8:54.7 and the sixth all time best 1500 meter time of 4:03.47 as a junior Padberg also participated on the HHS championship runner up foot ball team and was the leading scorer on the Mustang basketball team He has been named to participate on the State All Star A B Basketball scries to be held in June Conklin selected Coach of the Year Dale Conklin, Hcppner High School teacher, has been selected by hit fellow coaches as "Coach of the Year" for track in the class AAA AA-A/B This makes him a nominee for "Oregon Coach of the Year" in hta classification. The final selection for "Oregon Coach of the Year" will be made by the Executive Board of the OHSCA and «rill he announced on May 27 at the OHSCA Awards Banquet to he held in Eugene Dale will he a guest at mis banquet ansi recognized tor his award. Dale has been track coach at HHS for more than 20 years He has been head coach for the last 13 years Under his tutelage. Dale has had four district championships and four runners-up at district. He coached the 1988 Boys Track Team to the C lass A State Championships Dale lives in Heppner with his wife Linda and their four children Ashley. Jill, Sheryl and Mark. V Emphasizing everyone's role in protecting soil and water resources for future generations, the Morrow Soil Water Conservation District is encouraging local churches, organizations and mdiv iduals to join the nationwide observance of Soil and Water Stewardship Week. April 30-May 7 The local district, which works throughout the >ear on soil and water conservation measures, is providing literature ansi speakers that highlight man's responsibility to be active stewards of our nation's soil and water resources Rudy Bergstrom, chairman of the Morrow SWCD. said that although farmers and ranchers know that gixxJ conservation practices help increase yields and improve their profit potential, they also know the impor tance of passing on well-cared for natural resources for future food producers "W e could give our children all the money in the world, but it would do them little good unless we also give them a produc live soil on which to live," said Bergstrom Since 1955. the National Associa lion of Conservation Districts has sponsored Soil and Water Steward ship Week, in cooperation with near ly 3.(XX) local conservation districts nationwide, as one way to emphasize the importance of good stewardship of basic soil and water resources Materials especially designed to convey the 1989 theme.
